DPS Director of Research and Funding Martha Slocum said the district received $130,555 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Program for all six elementary schools. Reportedly, the DPS Student Nutrition Department provides all elementary school students with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks three times a week.
In addition, students receive informational handouts detailing the nutritional value of each food item distributed, as well as recipes and fun facts concerning the item.
Slocum said the Deming district has participated in the program since its inception several years ago.
Teachers reportedly utilize the snack time to discuss nutritional needs and best choices for a healthy lifestyle.
Also, the program is integrated with the Safe Routes to School Program which encourages students to walk or bike to school, and with the Transformational Communities Healthy Kids Program which focuses on improving student health with exercise and healthy food choices.
