The New Mexico Public Education Department reports that the purpose of the program, which extends the school year by 25 instructional days, is to narrow the achievement gap between at-risk students and other students, increase cognitive skills and achieve higher test scores for all participants.
Deming District Transportation Director Frank Milo said the summer session will begin Friday, June 24thand run through Friday, July 29th, and he is asking drivers to watch for elementary-aged students at cross walks, bus stops and school zones.
If a bus is stopped and red lights are flashing, drivers need to stop in both directions so children can load or unload at bus stops. And Milo is asking drivers to have patience in congested school zones as well.
K5-Plus will be held at all elementary schools in Deming and Columbus, so Milo said many neighborhoods are affected.
