Deming Police Captain Bobby Orosco said they were notified of a suspicious object at Eighth and Buckeye near a medical office at just after 2 p.m. Monday.
The object, described as a metal round container with a fuse extending from it, turned out to be an older model road flare.
Orosco said they were notified by a witness who said the object wasn’t there earlier in the day.
Orosco said they secured a three block area, cleared the pool, and called the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad to investigate. The bomb squad used a robot to determine that the device was stable and non-threatening.
Orosco said roads in the area were re-opened about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
