Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco told Deming Radio News that the phone scams have ranged from people acting as federal agents asking for payment for an arrest warrant for unpaid taxes to phone calls saying that a friend or family member has been kidnapped and they are demanding money.
The alleged kidnappers are telling the victim that if they hang up the phone physical harm or death will come to their friend or family member.
They tell the victim that they have to send money in the form of prepaid money cards.
Orosco said that they have discovered through investigations that, the alleged kidnapped victim is ok and has no knowledge of a kidnapping.
With the upcoming tax season and tax returns these phone scams may increase. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Deming Police Department if you receive these types of calls and do not send any money to these people.
