Deming Police Captain Bobby Orosco said the donated vehicle is valued at $750,000 and is being given to the Deming Police Department through the 1033 Program.
Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1997 authorizes the Department of Defense to transfer excess military property to state and local law enforcement.
Orosco said Deming is one of a dozen New Mexico law enforcement entities to be included in the 1033 program.
The vehicle comes from Sealy, Texas – home to a military vehicle plant that is slated to close this year.
Orosco said the vehicle is a MRAP or Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle.
Deming officers plan to use the armored vehicle in situations where civilians and officers need protection from hostile attacks.
