Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said they have been receiving complaints from property owners who have not given permission to have people park cars on their lots in an effort to sell the cars.
Gigante said the city has an ordinance addressing casual sales of motor vehicles which prohibits people from displaying a motor vehicle for sale at any location other than their current residence, place of employment or other site where they have obtained prior written permission from the landowner.
Also, people cannot display a motor vehicle for sale on any city-owned property or public right-of-way, other than the right-of-way adjacent to the seller’s residence.
Gigante said they are letting people know about the ordinance so vehicle owners realize what is lawful and what violates city ordinance.
The ordinance is published on the city’s website: www.cityofdeming.org.
Gigante said the ordinance carries a penalty of a fine of up to $500, up to 90 days in jail, or both.
