Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said his officers will be out in force next week patrolling school areas to help make for a safe start to the school year.
He cautioned drivers to be aware of school zones, to obey the posted speed limits when school zone lights are flashing, and to watch for children walking to and from school.
He also cautioned parents to use designated drop-off areas at schools, and to legally park when dropping off children and accompanying them inside the school building.
Gigante said last year they had parents simply stop in the roadway at different schools to drop off children, which created unsafe conditions for children and other drivers.
He said officers will be issuing warnings and citations when they observe school zone and other traffic violations.
