Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said his officers will be involved in increased patrols in high traffic areas of the city throughout the New Year holiday weekend as part of the department’s effort to enforce driving laws.
Officers reportedly will be looking for drivers who are speeding, not properly using seatbelt or child restraints, texting while driving, and committing any other traffic violations, but will focus primarily on DWI offenders.
Gigante said the officer overtime required by the saturation patrols is funded through an ENDDWI grant awarded through the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
The Luna County Sheriff’s Department deputies also will be doing selective traffic enforcement in January.
Law enforcement officers remind drivers to watch their speed, properly buckle themselves and their children, never text while driving or otherwise drive distracted, and never drive impaired.
