According to a media release, the first rebate program assists residents in transforming their lawns from grass to xeriscaping.
Xeriscaping is described in the rebate program “as a creative approach to landscaping that includes the use of well-adapted plants, efficient irrigation, careful design and proper maintenance” to save water and energy.
Residents selected for the rebate program will be paid $1 per square foot of area landscaped by the homeowner.
The second rebate program allows evaporative coolers to be replaced with refrigerated air units at a seasonal energy efficiency ratio of 16 or higher.
The program, funded through the Arizona Water Settlement Act and administered by the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, reimburses the home owner $1,000.
Homeowners must submit an application through the city before conversion work begins, and the program requires that the unit be installed by a licensed heating contractor.
