DEMING – It took spike strips, but finally a 47-year-old Deming man stopped for law enforcement on Interstate 10 just outside of Deming last week.
Deming Police Chief Clint Hogan told Deming Radio News that officers were called to the 800 block of Elm Street because there was an unknown man parked at the back of the property. The caller advised they thought the man was intoxicated.
Upon arrival, officers found 47-year-old Jason Diaz inside the vehicle, and refusing to step out.
Diaz then fled the officers at a high rate of speed, at one time he struck a police unit. He made it up to Interstate 10. However, officers had positioned a unit with spikes ahead of the chase. The spikes were safely deployed, and the vehicle came to a stop.
Officers initiated a felony traffic stop, but Diaz refused to exit the vehicle. The window of the vehicle was broken, and Diaz was extracted from the vehicle. He was taken to Mimbres Memorial Hospital to be medically cleared and blood alcohol tested.
Hogan said that Diaz was taken to the Luna County Detention Center to be booked on aggravated DWI, fleeing and other charges.
