City officials said that after evaluating public input in recent months, they are now looking at implementing mandatory poly-cart trash collection for areas with narrow alleys or no alley at all, but that all other residential properties would be on a by-demand basis.
City staffers are preparing an amended solid waste ordinance to include specifics for both voluntary and mandatory use of poly-carts.
The draft will be made available later this month or early July for public review, to be followed by a public meeting.
Issues being addressed include safety, code enforcement, alley cleanliness, pick-up schedules and poly-cart exceptions.
In late March, City Public Works Director Jim Massengill said the city hoped to start poly-cart trash pickup at residences east of the Columbus Highway in June.
At that time, Massengill said the city had ordered 1,900 96-gallon poly-carts – enough to serve approximately half of the targeted residences.
