Deming Activities Director Mike Ellis was in Albuquerque for Wednesday’s meeting and immediately filed an appeal to the classification and alignment change.
The appeal hearing is set for December 5th.
Ellis said Deming will be the smallest school in the state in Class 6-A, with our three-year average enrollment of 1,400 students. He said that compares to a 6-A school like Rio Rancho with 2,400 students.
The classification and alignment documentation said the criteria for the change to six classifications was to allow schools of all sizes to have a realistic opportunity to compete for championships, but critics say the opposite will happen if Deming is moved to 6-A.
Ellis said the NMAA tried to move Deming up to Class 5-A approximately five years ago, and the administration was successful in appealing that time to remain in Class 4-A.
