The NMAA board of directors recently approved classification and alignment for the next two-year block, and Deming will be in the 5A-District 3 division with Alamogordo, Chaparral and Santa Teresa.
According to a media release, the NMAA uses a comprehensive review of enrollment numbers every two years to determine classification and alignment for all sports.
An average of 40-day enrollment count numbers of grades 9-12 for the three years just prior to the start of a new block are
used to determine the enrollment figure for each school. All member schools are then ranked by their enrollment average.
The realignment of Deming’s current 6A-District 3 division will have seven schools competing beginning in the fall of 2016: Las Cruces High, Mayfield, Onate, Centennial, Gadsden, Carlsbad and Hobbs.
Centennial is moving from Class 5A to Class 6A.
