The Deming city councilors voted unanimously Tuesday night to adopt an ordinance eliminating plastic carryout bags provided by stores and restaurants.
City Administrator Aaron Sera said the ban will take effect in six months.
The ordinance will require wholesale and retail businesses to provide non-plastic reusable bags, recyclable paper bags, or cardboard boxes in lieu of plastic bags.
A reusable bag is defined as “a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple re-use and is either made of cloth or other machine-washable fabric.”
City Community Services Director Alexi Jackson said the ban will not affect garbage bags purchased for use by residents, which was a concern raised.
Proponents have pointed to the proliferation of retail bags littering public and private property around Deming as a reason for the ban.
Once in effect, the ordinance calls for violators to be punished by a fine of $100 or more.
