Dela King, who previously owned the downtown business “Room with a View,” recently accepted the position of Deming-Luna County MainStreet Program executive director.
King was involved with the MainStreet steering committee as far back as 2005, and said she was thrilled to be back in Deming and able to serve the community through the MainStreet Program.
Reportedly, Deming MainStreet has been gaining momentum with small grants and private donations that have made recent projects around the city possible.
Those projects include the Mimbres Wayfinding pots which were placed in the historic downtown area and which lead the public on a walking tour of historic buildings, and the 16 plaques placed on historic buildings which tell a brief history of each building.
MainStreet’s most recent project is renovating Pocket Park, located off Pine Street.
The project, a collaborative effort with MainStreet, the City of Deming, PNM and private donors, will involve a Mimbres-themed fountain, a mural, lighting, seating and the preservation of trees. The project is slated to be finished around Christmas.
Once the project is completed, the public will be able to rent the park for family events such as weddings or family reunions.
King said they are going to build on the Mimbres theme, and want Deming to become a destination as an Arts and Cultural District.
She also hopes to build stronger relationships with the community and other organizations to improve the visibility of the MainStreet vision, which is to preserve and revitalize the economic development of downtown and local neighborhood districts.
The Deming MainStreet office is located at 320 South Silver Avenue. King can be reached at 546-5753 or by emailing executivedirector@demingmainstreet.org.
