The funds also will be used to increase Columbus’ water system capacity to meet the needs of the new $85.6 million port of entry.
The actual amount of the award announced this week at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Columbus port is $504,300.
Officials said the corridor study will involve the City of Deming, Village of Columbus, Luna County, New Mexico Border Authority, Deming Public Schools, and other local stakeholders.
The study reportedly will look at economic impacts, strategies for increasing commercial freight traffic from Mexico, and accommodation of the overweight zone.
An alternative analysis of various potential corridor and design elements will be part of the project.
The water portion of the project will include the design of a new 100,000-gallon water storage reservoir among other issues.
In addition, officials said the village has completed an Economic, Land Use, and Infrastructure Plan and the New Mexico Border Authority is well underway with a diversion berm project.
