Deming Police Lt. Detective Matt Rudiger said the teen boys – one turning 17 Wednesday and one already 17 – were initially charged with burglary, but additional charges may be filed.
The two are accused of breaking into the Old Glory Outpost off East Pine Street sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning, and taking an extensive amount of alcohol, cigarettes and lottery tickets.
Officers responding to a tip of suspicious people hanging out in the parking lot of an apartment complex off North Eighth Street led to the impounding of a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass for investigative reasons.
Rudiger credited patrol officers and Detective Raymond Esquivel with spotting what appeared to be items stolen from Old Glory in the car, sending an officer to determine if the convenience store had indeed been burglarized and obtaining warrants to search the vehicle.
An officer quickly confirmed that the store had been broken into.
Rudiger said it appeared all of the property was recovered.
