
Luna County Sheriff’s Captain Jose Martinez said shots were fired but no one was injured in the incident that started at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at 8980 Plata Ave. in Columbus, approximately 1,000 yards west of the port.
Martinez said the gunman, who was ranting about people coming into the United States, was taken into custody by Customs and Border Protection agents, with assistance from Sheriff’s deputies.
A spokesman said the port of entry was closed from approximately 2:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Wednesday for safety concerns.
Columbus Elementary officials reportedly cancelled classes Wednesday, also for safety concerns.
Additional information on the gunman was not immediately available from Customs and Border Protection officials.
