(Deming) – The state Public Education Commission will meet in Columbus Thursday afternoon to hear community input on a proposal for a new charter school.
This is the fourth year parents and community activists have applied for a charter school in Columbus to serve students in mid-high and high school. This year’s application would have the school start with sixth graders.
Thursday’s public input hearing is set for 1-3 p.m. in the Columbus Community Center gymnasium, 100 North Boundary in Columbus.
The hearing, scheduled for 90 minutes, will allow members of the Public Education Commission to listen to comments from the charter school applicants, school district representatives and members of the public who would like to speak for or against the proposed school.
The commission members will then have an opportunity to question the applicants on their charter application. The contacts listed on the application are Jack Long and Philip Skinner, both of Columbus.
Members of the public may send the commission their comments electronically in support or against the charter school application via email to Linda.Olivas@state.nm.us.
Hand written comments also may be sent to the Public Education Commission, c/o Linda Olivas, 300 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501. Comments must be received by Tuesday, August 26th at 5 p.m.
Commission members will vote to approve, approve with conditions, or deny the new charter applications at their next PEC meeting scheduled for September 25th and 26th in Santa Fe.
