Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said that code enforcement was moved to the police department structure about two years ago, and then animal control duties, which had been under the police department umbrella, were added to the responsibility of the code officers.
Staffing also was increased to four officers, thanks to a 19-cent solid waste rate increase – the only city utility rate increase in the last five years.
Orosco said animal control and code enforcement go hand-in-hand, and the strategy has proven to be effective in addressing issues with property, illegal dumping, and animals across the city.
He added that compliance rates reach nearly 98-percent, which he credits to the officers’ approach to working with community members to resolve issues.
