Deming Mayor Benny Jasso and City Administrator Aaron Sera announced the award at a recent meeting of the Luna County Early Childhood Coalition, a key partner in the project.
The award will fund the bulk of a planned 4,800-square foot playground area to be built at Voiers “Pit” Park located off North Country Club Road.
Sera credited a “strong collaboration with community buy-in” as the key in receiving the award, which is funded by U.S. Housing and Urban Development through the state.
He also indicated construction would take place sometime around the third quarter of 2019.
Mayor Jasso thanked members of the Early Childhood Coalition for its fundraising, saying their work shows the community is not simply “waiting for a handout” to get projects completed.
Inspiration for the playground came from local parent Gloria Orozco, whose six-year-old son was diagnosed with a severe form of Muscular Dystrophy as an infant. She hopes a playground accessible to all will build inclusion and understanding among children and families.
