Gigante, whose official retirement day is May 27th, said Orosco’s appointment was the first step in the process of transitioning the leadership of the department.
Gigante said he has served the community as a police officer for 21 years – the last three as chief – and retirement was not an easy decision to make. He said changes in the state’s Public Employees Retirement Association coverage benefits forced his hand.
Gigante said he appreciated the dedication of his officers and administrative staff, adding that it was “hard to leave such a fine group of professionals.”
He also said he appreciated the support shown him from the community.
Orosco, like Gigante, has worked his way through the ranks of the Deming Police Department.
Orosco has served as Patrol Captain for the past three years, and is completing his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement.
He also has law enforcement experience with Luna and Dona Ana counties.
