An administrative order signed last week by Sixth Judicial District Chief Judge J.C. Robinson states that cameras, cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other recording-capable electronic devices are no longer allowed in the courthouse without special permission from the court.
Anyone entering the court building for any purpose is advised to leave their cell phone in their vehicle or with court security officers.
The policy does not apply to attorneys having business with the court.
The administrative order states that prospective jurors may keep their cell phones with them provided the phones are turned off – not just on silent or vibrate – so they can turn the device on and contact employers and family members should they be selected to serve on a jury.
The order also states that anyone with a cell phone must still comply with the prohibition against recording proceedings unless authorized by the court in writing, as specified in NM Supreme Court Rule 23-107.
