Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said an officer first noticed the car at about 9 p.m. Thursday driving erratically near Pine and Country Club.
A check of the Nevada license plate showed the plate stolen, and issued to a different vehicle than a Ford Mustang.
Gigante said the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver headed south on Country Club, west on Poplar, turned north and eventually got on the interstate heading east at a high rate of speed.
Gigante said his officer terminated the pursuit at that point and notified Las Cruces officials that the vehicle may be heading that way.
Then, officers patrolling the Quality Inn at about 4 a.m. Friday noticed the same vehicle parked in the parking lot.
The vehicle, which was determined to be stolen as well, was impounded and is being searched for any identifying information.
No arrests have been made.
