
The recount resulted in Vicki Chavez once again being declared the winner by 16 votes over Scott Chandler.
The recount numbers were the same as the primary election numbers, with Chavez receiving 892 votes and Chandler, 876 votes.
The district includes all of Luna County, most of Hidalgo County and one Grant County precinct.
The seat is open because Rep. Dona Irwin, a conservative Democrat, is retiring from the Legislature after 18 years.
Chavez will now face Democrat Candie Sweetser in the November general election.
Taxpayer-funded recounts are mandatory under state law when a legislative race is decided by less than 1 percent of the vote.
The Secretary of State’s elections director, Kari Fresquez, said the total cost for the recount, which also involved the Democratic nominee in House District 38, was about $21,000. The cost includes voting system programming, on-site technical support for the county clerks conducting the recounts and reimbursement of precinct board members.
