46-year-old Adela Saldana of Santa Ana, California, was pronounced dead at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, after being airlifted from the scene of the accident.
Saldana was driving a 2002 Ford gold-colored van west-bound at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday when she apparently struck a guard rail, then over-corrected which caused the vehicle to go airborne and roll numerous times, landing in the median about five miles west of Deming.
Three of Saldana’s passengers – a 7-year-old boy, a 10-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl – were ejected during the accident.
The girl, a 50-year-old man and an elderly woman were listed in critical condition and airlifted to El Paso. The boys were listed as stable and did not have life-threatening injuries.
Two air-ambulance helicopters were dispatched because of the number of injured passengers. The helicopters landed on the interstate after the westbound lane of the interstate was temporarily closed to allow for the landing.
