Commission Chair Linda Smrkovsky said Brice has been serving as deputy county manager, and previously served as both interim county manager and assistant county manager.
Smrkovsky said Brice brings experience running the county’s largest department – the jail – along with a distinguished career in the Navy and his work as an owner, manager and consultant in the private sector.
He replaces David McSherry, whose contract was terminated Oct. 31st.
Brice, a 1982 graduate of Deming High School, was first considered for the county manager’s position in 2016 when Ira Pearson was hired. At that time, Brice was working as an international defense consultant out of Pensacola, FL, after retiring from the Navy.
Pearson hired Brice in February 2017 to head the Luna County Detention Center. By then, Brice had moved to Las Cruces and purchased an auto repair business, which he still owns.
Brice said Detention Deputy Director Pablo Montoya will be handling the day-to-day operations at the Luna County Detention Center.
