Sheriff’s Captain Jose Martinez said 65-year-old David Cornwell of Sanford, FL, was transported by ambulance to the hospital with scrapes, cuts and other injuries from the accident.
Martinez said Cornwell was riding a bicycle on J-Street in front of the sheriff’s offices Saturday at about 3:20 p.m. when he was struck by a 2005 Ford Ranger being driven by 56-year-old Jose Rubio of Deming.
Rubio reportedly admitted to deputies that he looked down at his cellular phone just before hitting Cornwell.
Martinez said Rubio rendered aid to Cornwell until the ambulance arrived.
Rubio was cited for careless driving and no proof of insurance.
