A media release said the preliminary investigation indicated the bicyclist was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of travel near mile marker three and was struck head-on by an unknown vehicle, injuring the bicyclist on the roadway. That vehicle fled the scene.
Then a second vehicle traveling eastbound at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday did not see the injured bicyclist, who was lying in the roadway without reflective clothing, and also struck the bicyclist.
The driver of the second vehicle lawfully stopped and contacted police.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the man has not been released, pending next-of-kin notification.
Reportedly, a voter-registration card from Mexico was found on the body.
