Buckle Up. Every Time. Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving Deming/Luna County.

12/26/2021

Picture
DEMING - This holiday season, Luna County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with our local DWI Program to remind all drivers about the importance of buckle up and the dangers of drinking and driving.
From January to November 2021, New Mexico Department of Transportation, Traffic Safety Division reported eighteen (18) passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes in Luna County (300% increased in fatalities from 2020). More than half (61.11%) were unrestrained. These deaths represent needless tragedies for families across Luna County and may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.
This holiday season, Luna County Sheriff’s Office urge drivers to make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up before you even turn on the car. This is one of the busiest times for our roads, more drivers will be on our roads than usual, increasing the likelihood of a motor vehicle crash.
Before traveling to holiday festivities or seasonal vacations, make sure you plan for a sober ride home before enjoying an alcoholic beverage and make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled before you even turn on the car.
“It’s critical that drivers understand the significance of seatbelt safety and sober driving. With more drivers on the roads during this busy time of year, it’s more important than ever for us to stress the importance of safe driving habits,” said Captain Michael Brown. “The bottom line is that seat belts save lives”.
If you’re the designated driver, make sure you keep that promise of safety to yourself and your passengers. Stay hydrated with water and other non-alcoholic beverages. Support other designated drivers, too. It can be a long night, but people are counting on you, not to mention the other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians on the streets. Take the role of designated driver seriously — people are relying on you.
      Luna County
Sheriff’s Office will continue enforcing seat belt laws and conducting saturation patrols during the month of December 2021.
