On January 1st, New Mexico State Parks across the state are sponsoring free, guided hikes as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes.
State Parks Director Christy Tafoya said they are excited to host First Day Hikes as a great way to cure cabin fever and burn off extra holiday calories.
In our area, a guided hike is scheduled Sunday from 10 a.m.-noon at City of Rocks State Park between Deming and Silver City. The hike will take place on the park’s newly made Cienega trail, will be approximately two miles long, is listed as moderately difficult, and participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes or boots and take water.
Also Sunday from 9-10:30 a.m. there will be a guided hike at Rockhound State Park southeast of Deming. Participants will hike the Jasper trail, listed as approximately 1.3 miles, and will explore the different minerals, vegetation and wildlife at the park. Again, participants should wear sturdy shoes or boots and take water.
Details about other hike locations, difficulty and length, terrain and tips regarding proper clothing are listed on www.nmparks.com.
