Picture
(Deming) – The Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School Governance Council will meet in special session Monday evening.
Included on the agenda is a resolution appealing the Deming School Board’s recent decision not to reauthorize the school’s charter.
Since in New Mexico, a charter school may be authorized by the local school board or the State Public Education Commission, Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School will have to seek authorization from the state to continue operation.
The governance council’s vote on the appeal will follow an executive – or closed – session to address pending litigation.
The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the board room of Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School, 315 East First Street.
The meeting will be open to the public.

(Deming) – Deming High School officials are alerting parents that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – or FAFSA – has undergone recent changes which affect how students access and sign the federal student aid application.
The Federal Student Aid PIN was replaced with the FSA ID in May 2015.

Jasso-Perales will be hosting an FSA ID completion night during the Wildcat basketball game on Tuesday, January 5th, in the lobby of the main gym at Deming High School from 5-6:30 p.m.
Each student and one parent will need to have a separate personal email to get started.

12/30/2015

Picture
(Deming) – We have a correction to make on voting locations for the March 1st municipal election.
The city of Deming will be using consolidated precincts for the election, which means registered voters may vote at either Holy Family Parish Hall, 615 South Copper, or at the Mimbres Valley Learning and Special Events Center, 2300 East Pine, on election day.
There will be no specific precinct voting locations.
Voters who wish to vote absentee will be able to obtain an application from the Municipal Clerk’s Office, 309 South Gold Avenue.
Again, the official Deming Municipal Declaration of Candidacy day is this coming Tuesday, January 5th.
Up for election this cycle is the municipal judgeship currently held by Frank VanGundy, as well as council districts two and three – the seats currently held by Roxana Rincon and Joe “Butter” Milo, respectively.
All three offices are for four-year terms, and all three incumbents plan to run for reelection.

Deming PD Plan Saturation Patrols

12/29/2015

Picture
(Deming) – Officers with the Deming Police Department will be conducting DWI saturation patrols January 1st, 2ndand 3rd.
Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said his officers will be involved in increased patrols in high traffic areas of the city throughout the New Year holiday weekend as part of the department’s effort to enforce driving laws.
Officers reportedly will be looking for drivers who are speeding, not properly using seatbelt or child restraints, texting while driving, and committing any other traffic violations, but will focus primarily on DWI offenders.
Gigante said the officer overtime required by the saturation patrols is funded through an ENDDWI grant awarded through the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
The Luna County Sheriff’s Department deputies also will be doing selective traffic enforcement in January.
Law enforcement officers remind drivers to watch their speed, properly buckle themselves and their children, never text while driving or otherwise drive distracted, and never drive impaired.

Mimbres Memorial Hospital Begins Hospitalist Program

12/29/2015

Picture
(Deming) – Mimbres Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home in Deming has started a hospitalist program in response to a health care market analysis on how to better serve the southwest region of New Mexico.
Hospitalists are described as medical professionals whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients.  Their activities reportedly include patient care, as well as teaching, research and leadership related to hospital medicine.
Mimbres Memorial officials said the hospitalist program started December 23rd, with Sara Campbell, a board certified Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Jon Perry, a certified Masters of Physician Assistant Studies, as the two healthcare providers staffing the program.
Campbell, a healthcare provider for eight years, has been in the Deming community since February of 2011.
Perry is relocating from Klammath Falls, Oregon, and has been a healthcare provider for over eighteen years, in both hospital and long-term care settings.  Perry also is fluent in Spanish.
Reportedly, many patients are referred to hospitalists by their primary care physicians for treatment during the duration of their hospitalization and then returned to the care of their regular doctor after discharge.
Mimbres CEO Steve Westenhofer said their hospitalist program will assist in a patient’s smooth and speedy recovery by following up on their tests and adjusting treatment plans throughout the day.
He added that the program is available to providers in the area, but any physician with medical staff privileges can still see their own patients should they choose to do so.
