(Deming) – An inmate at the Luna County Detention Center was stabbed numerous times by a fellow inmate Monday morning, and one stab wound was deep enough to puncture a lung.

Luna County Undersheriff Arturo Baeza said 19-year-old Gerardo Jaramillo suffered multiple stab wounds at the hands of 33-year-old Nathan Rowland of Silver City.

Jaramillo was transported from the jail to the hospital with a collapsed lung and other injuries following the attack at just before 10 a.m. Monday.

Rowland reportedly flushed the weapon before authorities could confiscate it.

Both inmates are considered violent offenders.

Rowland was arrested in Silver City in February of 2013 on outstanding warrants and in connection with the shooting of a Las Cruces man at the rest stop between Deming and Silver City.

At the time of his arrest, Rowland, a known member of the “Los Carnales” gang, was one of the New Mexico Corrections Department’s Most Wanted Offenders.

Jaramillo, who also was wanted on numerous warrants, turned himself in to authorities in September.

The month prior, he allegedly forced a driver to take him to Mexico while being pursued by law enforcement officers, and stabbed one of the two car-jacking victims in the upper right arm during the incident.

Baeza said the District Attorney’s office approved additional charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence for Rowland.
