(Deming) – Two area state parks  are among those waiving fees on New Year's Day and offering guided hikes as part  of a national initiative to get people to start 2013 outdoors.

Both Rockhound State  Park southeast of Deming  and City of Rocks State Park between Deming and Silver  City are taking part in the so-called “First Day Hikes” effort.

Anyone interested in  participating in the program at Rockhound State Park is invited to meet between  9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Visitor’s Center. The hike is described as  easy-to-moderate and you will learn about the unique botany of the park and will  enjoy the Visitor’s Center garden and Jasper Trail.

Anyone interested in  participating in the program at City of Rocks State Park is invited to meet at 9  a.m. Tuesday at the Visitor’s Center.  The hike is described as moderately difficult and will include a nature  walk focusing on local plants, animals, geology and park history.

State Parks Director Tommy Mutz  says the hikes will be a great way to cure cabin fever and burn extra holiday calories.

Other participating  parks include Bottomless Lakes and Leasburg Dam in southern New Mexico,  Cerrillos Hills State Park near Santa Fe and Sugarite Canyon State Park in  northeastern New
Mexico.

The National Association of State  Park Directors says more than 14,000 people hiked more than 30,000 miles in  state parks across the country as part of the 2012 First Day Hikes  event.

New Year's Eve Warnings

12/28/2012

Comments

Picture
(Deming) -- If you are planning an eventful New Year's Eve  party, consider yourself warned:   officers will be on patrol to make certain 2013 is brought in as safely as possible.

Area law enforcement agencies will be patrolling throughout  the New Year's holiday.  Drivers are  encouraged to designate a driver or make alternate plans to get home long before  they start drinking so they are not tempted to drive after
drinking.

Also, the Luna County DWI Prevention Program and Corre  Caminos transit service are joining forces to offer free rides for New Year’s  Eve.  Corre Caminos will be  operating from 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve to 2 a.m. New Year’s Day.  Call 575-313-3557 for a  reservation.

Another warning: if you are planning to go outside and shoot  guns at midnight on New Year's Eve, keep the laws of gravity in mind:  what goes up must come down.  A bullet discharged into the air will  come down somewhere, possibly causing injury to a person or  property.

And Deming Police Chief Michael Carillo reminds residents  that it is a crime to discharge a firearm within the city limits and officers  will be citing people who choose to fire weapons as part of their  celebration.

Also, Carillo asks people to have consideration for their  neighbors when hosting parties.  He
said officers will be issuing loud noise citations if they are called to a residence.

Most importantly, make it a safe New Year's Eve: we need you -- our listeners -- back in 2013!

Have a safe, and Happy New Year!

Deming Student FAFSA Pin Number Night Planned

12/26/2012

Comments

(Deming) -- An event designed to assure that high school seniors interested in going to college have FAFSA pin numbers will take place  Friday, January 11th, during the home boys’
basketball  game.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student  Aid.

Students who will be attending college in the 2013-2014  school year will need to start working on their FAFSA paperwork. Applications can be completed beginning January  1st, but Deming High School advisors stress that students and at least one  parent need to apply for a pin number before the application can be started.

Students and parents who are eligible citizens need to bring  social security cards when applying for a pin number.

Again, Deming  high school seniors who have not obtained a pin number for the Free Application  for Federal Student Aid – or FAFSA – need to get a pin number before starting on  the financial aid
application.

You can get a number and more information on Friday, January  11th, in the lobby of the main Deming High School gymnasium during  the Wildcat basketball game.
