Jennifer DeLaney of Deming was nominated for the position, along with Court of Appeals Judges Julie Vargas and Briana Zamora, and retired Twelfth District Court Judge James Counts.
DeLaney, who has lived in Deming for 18 years, said it was important to have someone from a rural area on the high court.
She said the Supreme Court represents the judiciary for the entire state of New Mexico, not solely the Rio Grande corridor, and feels it is important to have a voice from outside that area on the court to ensure that every voice is heard.
The Sixth Judicial District encompasses Luna, Grant and Hidalgo counties.
A nominating commission met Thursday remotely to evaluate seven candidates for the vacancy being created by the Dec. 1st retirement of Justice Judith Nakamura.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will appoint Nakamura's replacement.
