Swope Wins Ag Discussion Competition

11/20/2017

Picture
(Deming) – Deming High graduate Stacy Swope won the collegiate division of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers discussion competition last week in Las Cruces.
And DHS student Truett Shafer made the final four in the high school division.
Swope won an all-expense paid trip to Reno, Nevada, in February to represent New Mexico at the national contest, as well as a new computer tablet.
Organizers say the future of agriculture depends on young people who can analyze agricultural issues and decide on solutions that best meet their needs.
The competitive event simulates a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. The competition is evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a pre-determined topic.
The objective is for participants to build basic discussion skills, develop a deeper understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool knowledge to reach consensus and solve problems.
