Most of the Deming students received "A Student Dictionary" as a gift from the Elks in the past week. Students in Columbus and T or C will be receiving the books soon. The Deming Elks are participating in a nationwide program called the "Dictionary Project". The mission of the Dictionary Project is "to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade." The Deming Elks Lodge has given dictionaries to third graders for over 10 years. Over half the Lodges in New Mexico also participate in the program. The program is just one more way the Elks show their commitment to youth.
![]() ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The federal government is one step closer to giving the green light to a proposed $2 billion transmission line between Arizona and New Mexico that has become a priority for the Obama administration. The Bureau of Land Management has released its environmental assessment of a compromise reached with the U.S. Defense Department over siting of the 515-mile-long line. The review found there would be no significant effects from burying a portion of the line to avoid interfering with operations at White Sands Missile Range. Officials were initially concerned the line could reduce testing operations and ultimately threaten national security. Disagreement over the location put the line in limbo last year. SunZia is one of seven pilot projects put on a fast track by the administration in hopes of boosting renewable energy development mainly across the West. ![]() (Deming) - (AP) — A Columbus man is facing charges that he exploited three young children to produce pornographic images. Founded in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday, Small Business Saturday gets shoppers out of the big box stores and into small, unique local businesses. Deming Chamber Executive Director Mary Galbraith said the Chamber would like the community to SEE Deming – S-E-E – which stands for Shop – Eat – Enjoy. She said it is about the community coming together to recognize small, local businesses. Galbraith said one of the things people may not realize is that when money is spent in Deming, the majority of it stays in Deming. And more money stays in the community if it is spent at a small, locally owned business. New Mexico MainStreet officials have said that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 stays in the community. But when $100 is spent at a national chain – even in a small town – only $43 stays in that town. Galbraith added that Small Business Saturday is all about supporting the businesses and business owners that make Deming unique. ![]() (Deming) – Here’s the area crime report: Anthony Campa, age 32, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Lucas Chavez, age 21, of Tularosa, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation… and Lisa Lee, age 29, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation. Students from Amanda Speer and Russell Husson-Matter’s fourth grade classroom set up a living wax museum in the school library for parents and visitors to view. The project represented the culmination of Husson-Matter’s student teaching experience. Husson-Matter is a self-described history buff and said he wanted to make history fun for the students. The students picked people representing different aspects of New Mexico’s history. Those interests ranged from Georgia O’Keefe and Billy the Kid to Demi Lovato and Neil Patrick Harris. One student even chose to research aliens in Roswell and presented himself as such. Husson-Matter said one of his goals for the project was that students would “walk away enjoying” history. |
