Deming Police Department Gets Grant for Drug Antidote Kits

10/31/2017

Picture
(Deming) – The Deming Police Department, with the assistance of a local doctor, recently secured a grant to supply drug overdose antidote kits in every patrol unit.
Earlier this year New Mexico became the first U.S. state to require all local and state law enforcement agencies provide officers with antidote kits as the state works to curb deaths from opioid and heroin overdoses.
But Chief Bobby Orosco said the unfunded mandate meant his department had to come up with a means to get the kits.
Orosco said Kaleo Pharma offered injection kits with naloxone, an overdose-reversal drug, providing a doctor agreed to oversee officer training on the use of the injections.
Orosco credited Dr. Victor Cruz, a local surgeon and Deming city councilor, for agreeing to the program and enabling the city to get 35 kits, containing two doses each.
Cruz said the injections, which he compared to an epi-pen, are easy to administer and will help officers, who are often the first to arrive on the scene of a suspected overdose, save lives.
The process reportedly also increases recovery opportunities for addicts.

Picture
(Deming) – Luna County’s Toss No Mas Cleanup is set for this Saturday.
Volunteers should meet at Luna County Courthouse Park at 8 a.m. Saturday to be dispatched from the park to one of several areas identified throughout the county as needing beautification.
Last year’s Toss No Mas saw over 350 volunteers pick up about 25,000 pounds of trash from approximately 35 miles of area roads.    Roadways are selected ahead of the pickup by staff from Keep Luna County Beautiful and Luna County Code Enforcement as well as based on complaints from the community.
Keep Luna County Beautiful Coordinator Joe Padilla said the cleanups are a fun and family-friendly opportunity for residents to volunteer and give back to the community.
Volunteers will be given water and supplied with safety equipment like reflective vests and gloves. Reaching devices are available for those unable to bend over to pick up trash.
As in past years, volunteers from Aramark will cook an appreciation lunch for cleanup participants and door prizes will be raffled off to participants.
Again, residents are encouraged to participate in Luna County’s Toss No Mas Cleanup this Saturday, Oct. 28th, by gathering at Courthouse Park at 8 a.m.
