Local Crime Report for Thursday October 31, 2013

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:

     Jose Granillo-Holguin, age 54, was arrested for battery against a household member… Craig Jackson, age 33, was arrested for burglary at Wal-Mart, shoplifting at K-mart and on two Magistrate warrants – one for failure to pay fines and one for failure to appear… Raymond Buckner, age 30, of Powdely, Texas, was arrested for worthless checks, on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… David Lucero, age 49, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with officers and shoplifting at Wal-Mart… Efren Martinez, age 47, was arrested for unlawful use of a license.

     Manuel Rodriguez, age 18, of Salem, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Victor Carrazco, age 40, was cited for shoplifting at Wal-Mart… Isaac Garcia, age 18, was cited for shoplifting at Wal-Mart… and Carissa Prevost, age 22, was cited for shoplifting at Wal-Mart.

     Also… a financial institution reported fraud over $700 in worthless checks… a massage table valued at $600 was taken from on top of a van parked at Wal-Mart… and a counterfeit $100 bill was discovered by a local utility company attempting to deposit bill payments.

Luna County Commission Meets

(Deming) – The Luna County Commissioners will meet in special session Friday.

     According to the agenda, the purpose of the meeting is to discuss removing certain vehicles from Luna County’s property inventory by approving that they be sold at public auction.

     The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m. Friday in the commission chambers, located on the third floor of the Luna County Courthouse.

     The meeting is open to the public.

Barrera Arrested with Drug Ring

(Deming) – Federal authorities say 18 people – including a Deming man – have been charged with participating in a three-state drug ring in the Southwest.

     Officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Mexico and the Drug Enforcement Administration said the ring allegedly obtained methamphetamine from Arizona and Texas.

     They said the drugs were allegedly distributed in Otero and Dona Ana counties in southern New Mexico earlier this year.

     The 43-count indictment was issued under seal on Oct. 16. It was unsealed Wednesday following arrests of 12 defendants, including two already in custody on unrelated state charges.

     Six of those charged remain at large.

     The Deming man, 40-year-old Cornelio Barrera, was arrested Tuesday in Duncan, Arizona.  He’s been charged with four counts involving trafficking in meth and conspiracy.

     Barrera will be transferred to New Mexico to face the federal charges in the indictment.

Deming Boy Hit by Car

(Deming) – A nine-year-old boy was hit by a car Wednesday.

     The accident occurred at the intersection of Poplar and Santa Barbara at about 5:15 p.m.

     According to Deming Police Captain Bobby Orosco, 26-year-old Misty Chacon was driving a 2006 Saturn west on Poplar and was attempting a left-hand turn onto Santa Barbara when she heard a bang and stopped the car. 

     She told officers she saw the boy’s legs under her vehicle, so she helped him onto the curb.

     Orosco said he was transported to the hospital with head and leg injuries.

     Chacon was cited for no driver’s license and no insurance.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:

     Daniel Cook, age 42, was arrested for resisting or evading officers, concealing identity, possession of drug paraphernalia and on an Idaho warrant for a probation violation… Rafael Chavez, age 33, was arrested for embezzlement of a vehicle and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Mario Magallanes, age 28, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Arlee Sweat, age 41, was arrested on two District Court warrants for failure to appear… and Jasmine Padilla, age 18, was arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to appear.

     Also… criminal damage estimated at $6,000 occurred to the motor of a well pump off Keeler Road Northwest… $300 in criminal damage to a vehicle in the form of paint scratches occurred while the vehicle was parked off Holly Street… tools, system testers and fuel from a motor home with a combined value of $250 were taken from off Ventura Road Southeast… and Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to a cotton bale fire off Hermanas Road.

Chamber to Hold Holiday Art Festival This Weekend

(Deming) – The Deming Luna County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Deming Holiday Art Festival this weekend at the Mimbres Valley Learning and Special Events Center.

     Chamber Executive Director Mary Galbraith said exhibitors from Arizona, Texas and New Mexico will be in attendance, offering jewelry, art work, horseshoe art and more.

     There will be food and music, too.

     Galbraith said it is a good chance to get started on your holiday shopping.

     The Deming Holiday Art Festival will be open from 9-5 Saturday and 11-4 Sunday at the Special Events Center, 2300 East Pine.



Pearce to spend Halloween in Deming

(Deming) – U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce will be spending Halloween in Deming.

     The public is invited to visit with Pearce Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Motor Inn and Restaurant on East Pine Street.  Dinner is dutch-treat or you can just stop for a cup of coffee and conversation.

     As always, Congressman Pearce will take questions from constituents and discuss any topics of concern to New Mexicans.  Staff will be available to answer questions and assist constituents with casework or any issues related to federal agencies.

Four local teens involved in rollover accident

(Deming) – Four 16-year-olds were in a one-vehicle rollover accident Tuesday afternoon.

     According to a Luna County Sheriff’s Department report, 16-year-old Jesus Venzor was driving a 2004 Ford northwest on Keeler Road at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control of the vehicle.

     It appeared that Venzor had been driving at a high rate of speed when he started to skid off the dirt road and his vehicle went into the bar ditch and rolled over at least two times.

     He had two 16-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl with him as passengers.

     Venzor nor his passengers were ejected during the accident but all were transported to the hospital with various injuries.

     Venzor was cited for careless driving.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:

     Jonas Ronald, age 50, was arrested for battery against a household member… Andy Marquez, age 28, of Las Cruces, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Andy Peeler, age 43, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… and Mary Perez, age 38, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear.

     Also, a 27-year-old Deming man reported being the victim of fraud after receiving a phone call saying he owed $600 for a fraud and tax investigation, which he paid by money card.  He was contacted again for additional payment and notified the Luna County Sheriff’s Department after the second contact.

 WNMU - Deming Event Friday

(Deming) – There will be a “Western New Mexico University – In Your Community” event here Friday.

     Director Ken Leupold said the WNMU-Deming campus at 2300 East Pine will have “Day of the Dead” ofrendas – or altars – available for community preview Friday from 3-8 p.m.

     Ofrendas reportedly are an essential part of the “Day of the Dead” celebrations. The word “ofrenda” means offering in Spanish and the ofrendas are set up to remember and honor the memory of ancestors.

     Then, at 4 p.m. Friday, WNMU President Joseph Shepard will give a State of the University address at the La Fonda Restaurant.

     And following President Shepard’s address from 5:30-8:30 p.m., there will be live music, food, community booths, games and prizes at Voiers “Pit” Park.

     The community is invited to exciting live performances by Jessica Juarez and Danzantes Del Sol at the park.
