Local Crime Report for Friday September 25, 2020

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Reymundo Vera, age 40, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for causing criminal damage to the property of a household member, on a District Court warrant for failure to appear, and on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Gerald Fiorentino, age 44, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for causing criminal damage to the property of a household member… Arissa Garcia, age 22, was arrested for disorderly conduct and interference with officers… 
     Juanita Hernandez, age 39, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… and Meleni Pollock, age 26, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear. 
     Also, Deming Police are investigating evidence of shots fired in the 200 block of E. Spruce… three motorcycles, with a combined value of over $5,000, were reported stolen from a residence off W. Second St… and a cellular phone valued at $1,600 was reported stolen from a residence off W. Oak. 

COVID-19 Free Testing in Deming Saturday

​DEMING – There will be a free, drive-up screening for the COVID-19 virus in Deming Saturday. 
     The New Mexico Department of Health will provide the screening this Saturday, Sept. 26th, at the Luna County Public Health Office, 215 S. Silver Ave., from 8-10 a.m. or while supplies last. 
     Those wishing to be tested are asked to pre-register online at https://cvtestreg.nmhealth.org/.  
     The Department of Health strongly encourages people with fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and/or loss of taste or smell to be tested. 
     Also encouraged to be tested are asymptomatic people who are close contacts or household members of people in their infectious period who have already tested positive for the coronavirus, or who live or work in congregate settings such as long-term care facilities and group homes, or patients who are scheduled for surgery and whose provider has advised them to get tested before the procedure.  
     All testing is still free of charge. Those with insurance are asked to provide their insurance information.

Six Luna County Detention Center Staff are Newly Certified

​DEMING – Six Luna County employees recently became distance learners as the New Mexico EDGE program moved its core program classes online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
      A media release said the six Luna County Detention Center employees completed the requirements to earn certified jail specialist designations. 
     The newly credentialed detention personnel are, alphabetically, Derek Apodaca, Patty Armendariz, Richard Casillas, Javier Gallegos, Estefania Gomez, and Sean Reinheimer. 
     New Mexico EDGE, which stands for Education Designed to Generate Excellence in the public sector, is a nationally accredited program administered by New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. 
     To obtain a certification designation, the students must complete a number of classes, along with other requirements.

Few Details Released in Saturday Street Shooting

​DEMING – Deming Police are releasing few details in a shooting that occurred Saturday night on W. First St. 
     Chief Alex Valdespino identified a man who died from multiple gunshot wounds in the incident as 36-year-old Roland Valenzuela of Deming. 
     Valdespino said an 18-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder, and a 50-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. 
     Both were transported to Mimbres Memorial Hospital and the injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. 
     Valdespino said his officers responded to a call of shots-fired at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19th, in the 700 block of W. First St. 
     He said the investigation is continuing and his detectives are working closely with the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s office.

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     A criminal summons was issued to Alexis Peschard, age 24, for battery… David Garcia, age 19, was arrested for criminal trespass… Chasidy Washington, age 42, was arrested for prowling… and Edward Padilla, age 24, of Truth or Consequences, was arrested on a Grant County District Court warrant. 

Volleyball Workouts are Underway at DPS Schools

DEMING – Deming athletic officials announced this week volleyball workouts have begun at Red Mountain Middle School and Deming High School. 
     The schools are participating under the state- and district-mandated COVID-19 protocols. 
     Deming High Lady Wildcats will be led by first-year head coach Henry Gettler IV. 
     Gettler will be assisted by Deming High graduate, former player, and current fitness specialist Christina Reyes, and district social worker Chester Kwong. 
     Red Mountain volleyball will be led by head 8th grade coach Pam Wertz and head 7th grade coach Natalie Nicoll. 
     Notices have been sent to all players who have been cleared by DHS athletic trainers. 
     Questions should be directed to your child’s school. 

Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week Underway

​DEMING – National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week is underway, with the focus on the importance of properly securing children in appropriate car or booster seats. 
     To support the event, the Luna County Parents as Teachers providers are reminding local residents in need of a car seat to contact them. 
     Director Anna Barraza said anyone needing a car seat should call her office at 546-9254 to make an appointment for the proper car seat based on a child’s size. 
     Through Luna County Parents as Teachers, the car seat is available for a $25 donation to Safer New Mexico Now. 
     According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, using child safety seats decreases the risk of death by an estimated 71% for rear-facing infants and 54% for older, forward-facing children when an auto accident occurs. 
     Again, the number for Luna County Parents as Teachers is 546-9254. 

Treadwell Goats, Lambs Place at State Fair

​DEMING – Deming High School Senior Maison Treadwell was the only Luna County youth to enter this year’s New Mexico State Fair Virtual Livestock Show, but she represented Luna County well. 
     Treadwell had four animals place in the top three of their respective classes at the competitive statewide show. 
     Treadwell had a goat place first in Class 6, and another place third in Class 8, and had a lamb place second in Class 3, and another place second in Class 4. 
     Entries for the livestock show opened in early August, with the entry process being entirely online for the first time ever. 
     To compete in the virtual livestock show, Treadwell submitted a show video and side profile picture of each of her goats and lambs. 
     All exhibitors who participated in the virtual show are included in an online premium support sale, which is described as a contribution sale for each exhibitor with no livestock changing ownership. 
     Supporters can make contributions directly to exhibitors, and the minimum contribution is $25. 
     The sale is underway now and will close Friday, Sept. 25th, at noon.

Street Closures for Drivers, City/County/Deming Public Schools Services

DEMING - Local contractor DEI, Inc. will be performing street repair in the area near the intersection of 8th and Pear Streets this week and next.
    
Pear Street will be closed from 8th Street west to Deming Intermediate School on Thursday, September 24.
    This same section of Pear Street and the 8th  - Pear intersection will be closed next week from Wednesday, September 30 through Friday, October 2.  Motorists must find an alternate route around the work area.

Exact closure periods are dependent upon material and equipment availability.

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Garry Kavanaugh, age 37, of Las Cruces, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license was suspended or revoked, and on an Adult Probation and Parole Office order for a probation violation… William Hefley, age 25, was arrested for shoplifting and on an Otero District Court warrant for failure to appear… and Tyler Trusty, age 32, of Las Cruces, was arrested on two Magistrate warrants – one for failure to appear and one for failure to pay fines, on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to appear, and on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines. 
     In other news: a resident of S. Ruby reported an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after telling two males who were trespassing in the backyard of the residence to leave and having one pull a handgun out before jumping the fence and running. 
     Also, a vehicle parked off E. Plum was burglarized and miscellaneous items were taken.
