Local Crime Report for Monday September 24, 2018

(Deming) – Here’s today’s local crime report:

     Howard Porter, age 18, arrested for battery against a household member with a deadly weapon… Gabriel Gonzales, age 25, arrested for aggravated battery on a household member… Allen Alfred, age 24, arrested on a District court warrant for failure to appear…  Erica Saenz, age 30, of Albuquerque, NM was arrested on a District Court warrant for failure to appear and driving with a suspended or revoked license… Christina Ramirez, age 32, arrested for driving with a suspended or revoked license…  Edward Rivas, age 33, arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to appear…  Anthony Alvarez, age 33, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines and interference with officers. 
     Elieser Arvizo, age 21, of Columbus, NM was cited for possession of under an ounce of marijuana.
     In other reports, about 40 CD’s and some consumables were taken from a residence on Sandburg Street… a 2011 white Dodge Caravan was reported stolen from a residence on South Tin. Mail was reported stolen from mailboxes on Sands road in the county.  A couple who were hunting for arrow heads in the Lucca and Sundance Road area came across what is believed to be human bones.  The bones were sent to the medical lab in Albuquerque for testing. 

New Mexico Legislature’s Science, Technology and Telecommunications Committee meeting Sept. 24-25 in Deming and Columbus

(Deming) – The New Mexico Legislature’s Science, Technology and Telecommunications Committee will meet Sept. 24-25 in Deming and Columbus.
State Representative Candie Sweetser (D-Deming) serves as vice-chair of the committee.
     The Sept. 24 meeting will start at 9 a.m. at the Andres Z. Silva Conference Center with local officials welcoming lawmakers to the community, followed by a project-status update from the state Department of Information Technology presented by Acting Secretary Estevan Lujan.
     Lawmakers will tour the algae farm west of Columbus where Omega 3 fatty acids are being harvested for human and animal feed supplements. They also plan to visit the new international port of entry being built south of Columbus.
     Other agenda topics tentatively include science and technology needs for a global minerals’ development firm, an update on the New Mexico State University Sunspot Consortium, education for careers in aquaponic farming, developments in cloud computing for public agencies and cybersecurity, and cross-walking data bases to increase efficiency for driver's license renewals.
     All sessions are open to the public, and there will be a public comment period.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     A criminal summons was issued for Adelaida Corral, age 62, for battery… Mathew Wilderman, age 31, was arrested for interference with officers, and on two District Court warrants – both for failure to appear… Anthony Terry, age 45, of Surprise, AZ, was arrested on an equipment violation…
     Bryan Reed, age 20, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Moises Lopez, age 33, was arrested on a District Court arrest warrant… Manuel Gonzalez, age 45, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Antoinette Reyes, age 29, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Hector Flores, Jr., age 32, was cited for unauthorized burning… Bianca Snyder, age 22, was cited for two counts of unvaccinated animal, and two counts of dog at large… and a 16-year-old boy was cited for public affray.
     Also, a compressor and a roll of metal fencing, with a combined value of $1,650, were taken from a location off Van Buren Rd SW… a vacuum cleaner and cash, with a combined value of $400, were taken from a business off E. Spruce… tools, a hitch, and clothing, with a combined value of nearly $400, were taken from a pickup parked off J-Street… a window valued at $100 was broken on a residence off E. Broadway in Columbus; a battery valued at $100 was taken during the break-in… and a counterfeit $100 bill was discovered at a business off Hwy 418 SW.


Activities Planned at the Columbus Library

(Deming) – The Columbus Village Library has several activities planned over the next few weeks.
     On Wednesday, Sept. 26th, there will be a Papel Picado Workshop open to all ages. It will be offered at 10 a.m. and again at 5 p.m., and supplies will be furnished.
     The monthly trash pick-up will be Saturday, Sept. 29th, from 8-9 a.m. Anyone interested in participating should meet at the library at 8 a.m. Refreshments will be provided following the trash pick-up.
     Wednesday, Oct. 10th, there will be a Paper Marigolds Workshop for ages 8 and up. Participants will learn how to make flower decorations. It will be offered at 10 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. Supplies will be furnished.
     And the library will provide space to display Ofrendas – or memorials – for Dia de Los Muertos. Ofrendas may be set up any time Oct. 23rd through the 27th, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will remain on display through Nov. 5th.
     The Columbus Village Library is located at 112 W. Broadway.

Professional Baseball is coming to Deming

(Deming) – The Border Professional Baseball League will open its inaugural season in March of 2019 with the first two franchises being placed in Deming and Lordsburg.

     Deming resident Art Arrey will be heading the Deming operation, and Angel Saenz will be in charge of the Lordsburg franchise.
     Organizers say two more teams will be named soon to get the six-week professional league up-and-running.
     A media release said the league will be conducting tryouts on Saturday, Sept. 29th, at the Wildcat baseball field.
     Registration begins at 9 a.m., and participants can expect four to six hours of testing and playing as league and team representatives put players through drills and live-game competition.
     The cost to participate in the tryouts is $40.
     Director of Operations John Guy from Casa Grande, AZ, said the teams will be drawing players from across the nation and internationally, as well as from the local geographical area.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     A criminal summons was issued for Estevan Macias, age 26, for causing criminal damage to the property of a household member… Israel Torres, age 29, was arrested on two Chaves County District Court warrants – one for embezzlement of a motor vehicle, and one for failure to comply with conditions of release… Bennie Mercer, age 49, was arrested for unlawful use of a license… Santiago Velasquez-Saucedo, age 55, was arrested for trespassing at a business and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… and Rosa Del Real, age 18, was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
     Also, 17 chickens valued at over $250 were killed by unrestrained dogs at a residence off Monte Vista Rd.

Have Coffee with a Cop on Oct. 3rd

(Deming) – Deming Police Department officers are inviting you to have coffee with them.
     Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said National “Coffee with a Cop” Day is Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, and his department is hosting an event that day from 8-10 a.m. at Copper Kettle Coffee Company.
     The slogan of the national campaign is: “Building relationships one cup at a time.”
     Orosco said it is another opportunity for his officers to interact with residents in a situation other than in an official capacity.
     The Deming Police Department will have coffee and pastries provided by Copper Kettle, and the public is invited.
     Again, “Coffee with a Cop” will take place Oct. 3rd from 8-10 a.m. at Copper Kettle Coffee Company, 200 S. Gold St. – on the southwest corner of Gold and Spruce.

Heinrich’s Staff Here Friday

(Deming) – U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich's staff will hold mobile office hours in Deming Friday.
     According to a media release, staff will be on hand to assist residents who have questions regarding Social Security benefits, Medicare, immigration, veterans’ benefits, student loans, and other federal programs.
     Anyone needing information or assistance with a federal issue is encouraged to attend.
     Heinrich’s staff will be available from 10:30 a.m.-noon this Friday, September 21st, at the Deming Senior Center, 800 S. Granite St.
     Constituents who are not able to attend Friday’s mobile office hours are encouraged to visit the “Helping You” section of Sen. Heinrich's online office at www.Heinrich.Senate.Gov or call the senator’s Las Cruces office at (575) 523-6561.

Homecoming Scheduled Events Changed Due to Weather

(Deming) - Due to the weather the Bonfire is canceled and the Powder Puff Football Game will be moved to Friday September 21 starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Deming High School Football Field, 1300 South Iron Street, Deming, New Mexico.
     The Homecoming Parade has been postponed to Friday September 21 at 10:30 a.m. The parade line up will be located at Platinum and Spruce Streets, behind the Snappy Mart.
     The parade route will start at Platinum and Spruce, West on Spruce to Gold, South on Gold to Ash, West on Ash to Nickel, South on Nickle to Wildcat Drive.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Lisa Ortiz, age 45, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, on a District Court warrant for failure to appear, and on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Lorenzo Hernandez, age 23, was arrested on two District Court arrest warrants for failure to comply with conditions of probation… Diego Herrera, age 64, was cited for dog at large and unvaccinated animal… and two girls – a 14-year-old and a 13-year-old – were cited for public affray at Red Mountain Middle School.
     Also, two two-way radios and a speaker, with a combined value of $1,600, were taken from a location off W. Buckeye.
