Local Crime Report for Friday September 28, 2018

(Deming) – Here’s today’s local crime report:
     Javier Torres, age 27, arrested on four Grant County warrants for burglary, reckless driving, resisting evading or obstructing an officer, driving without a license, burglary, larceny and various driving violations… Susan Marie Kozubek, age 64, arrested for battery on a household member… Miguel Angel Chavez, age 29, arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear…
       Christopher Hernandez, age 37, arrested on a District court warrant for probation violations and a Municipal court warrant for failure to pay fines…  Gabriela Rodriguez, age 21, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Monte Lamar Carr, age 47, arrested on a District court warrant for probation violations… Gunter Goley, age 23, from Las Cruces, arrested on a District court warrant for probation violations… Cerbando Acosta Carbajal, age 22, of Columbus, NM arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…  Gemma Escobar-Ortiz, age 37, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear.


NM State Police to Hold Saturation Patrols and DWI Checkpoints

(Deming) -  State Police in Luna County and around New Mexico will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance and drivers’ license checkpoints in Luna County and all New Mexico counties during the month of October.
     New Mexico State Police say they are bringing awareness to this in an effort to reduce alcohol related fatalities, through continued media attention.  Officials say that the checkpoints are helping change society’s attitudes about drinking and driving.
     People are choosing not to drink and drive.  This is the biggest step in keeping impaired drivers from crashing into our friends and families. ​
      This is being funded from the New Mexico ENDWI grant.



Luna County Commission to Meet Friday

(Deming) – The Luna County Commissioners will meet in special session Friday.
    Included on the agenda, the commission will consider and vote on an amended resolution 18-40 Water Trust Board Funding application.
     The commission will also meet in executive or closed session to discuss limited personnel matters pertaining to the County Manager Ira Pearson’s contract and the ongoing internal affairs investigation.
    The commission meeting is set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning in the commission chambers, located on the third floor of the Luna County Courthouse.
     The special meeting is open to the public.   The executive – or closed – session to discuss the county manager, will follow the open meeting, and is closed to the public.

    Gregorio Rios, age 36, arrested on two District Court warrants for failure to appear…  Mark Hernandez, age 19, arrested on a Municipal court warrant for failure to pay fines… Melinda Paz, age 29, arrested on a District Court warrant for violation conditions of probation and on a Probation Department warrant for violating conditions of probation…  Robert Nevarez, age 33, arrested for driving with a suspended or revoked license… Martha Cecilia Peraza, age 32, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear, and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license… Miguel Chavez, age 29 of Columbus, NM arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to appear and possession of drug paraphernalia…  Nora Aguilera, age 36, arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear, and on a United States District Court warrant for distribution of 50 grams of methamphetamines.   
     Christopher Valdez, age 29, cited for possession of under an ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia… James London, age 58 cited for junked vehicles and parts unauthorized accumulation… Marya Peron, age 41, was cited for unlawful accumulation, failure to provide proper animal care, and removal of weeds… Robert Sandoval, age 40, cited for dogs running at large, and removal of weeds…  a 2007 Hyundi valued at $2500 reported stolen after it was loaned out, and never returned. The incident occurred on South Gold Street.  A 2012 8x14 trailer (maroon in color) with a value of $3000 was taken from a residence on Keeler Farm Road…  A mini-cycle valued at $400 was taken from a location off New Frontier Road… a power washer and two bikes with a combined value of $360 was reported taken from a residence on South 9th Street.

Students Help Advance City Project

(Deming) - Architecture and design students from two universities are part of an ongoing project with the city of Deming to revitalize the west end of town. 
    
About 20 students from the School of Architecture and Design at University of New Mexico and Woodbury University/San Diego, met with city officials recently as part of the project.
     They were joined by staff from the schools and city officials, including Mayor Benny Jasso, Councilor Victor Cruz and Aaron Sera, city administrator, to discuss planning the first phase of the conceptual design for an incubator and revitalization project.
     Sera explained that the area under review includes the Deming’s western access to Interstate 10, which sees upwards of 60,000 vehicles pass a day in both directions. Then establishing a business incubator and improving the area that will provide benefits for the community, including attracting and serving visitors off the interstate. 
    
The concept calls for an anchor business that can teach and model business techniques to foster the development of other businesses in the area. 
    
The meeting included an in-depth look at the city overall using maps, with an emphasis on connectivity, infrastructure, parks and how green spaces might be improved.
     Sera said part of the study includes where to place a splash-pad, which would bring another water-based recreation facility to the community.

Chamber to Hold Candidate Forum Thursday Night

(Deming) – The first of two candidate forums will be held Thursday evening in Deming.
     The Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce invites the public to the first of two Candidate’s Forum on Thursday, September 27, at 6:00 p.m. The forum will be held at the First United Methodist Church located at 1020 S. Granite Street in Deming.
     Democratic and Republican statewide candidates or representatives for Governor, Lt. Governor, Senator, Attorney General, Auditor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Land Commissioner, Supreme Court, and Court of Appeals will attend the event. 
     Local voters are encouraged to attend the forum to learn where candidates stand on issues important to you. 
     On Thursday, October 11th, a second candidate forum will be held for local voters to have the opportunity to attend the forum that will include the rest of the candidates on the November ballot.

Lordsburg Applies For Live Horse Race Facility

(Lordsburg) - Hidalgo Downs LLC has submitted an application for to operate a Live Horse Race facility to the New Mexico Racing Commission. The proposed location will be at Lordsburg, New Mexico.
     In the application Hidalgo Downs has proposed operating a Horse Race Track, Casino and Rodeo that will also include the following amenities; a family water park; a horse racing and rodeo museum; a concert venue; and a 135-room hotel. In addition, Hidalgo Downs plans to provide short term quarters for race horse and rodeo handlers. 
     The Racino public hearing will be held Friday, September 28 @ 1 p.m. and the Lordsburg High School Gymnasium 505 W. 4th Street.  The public is invited to attend to find out more about what the proposed Hidalgo Downs will have to offer.
     Hidalgo Downs LLC offers decades of experience and is uniquely qualified to organize, construct, and operate the Live Horse Race Track, Casino, and Rodeo in Lordsburg, New Mexico. Hidalgo Downs LLC has arranged sources of financing to develop the proposed approximately $75,000,000 project.

     Again, The Racino public hearing will be held Friday, September 28 @ 1 p.m. and the Lordsburg High School Gymnasium 505 W. 4th Street. 

DAG Announce Annual Petpourri Fundraiser

(Deming) – Deming Animal Guardians will be holding its annual Petpourri Party fundraiser at the Adobe Deli on Saturday, September 29th, from 6 to midnight.
     Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. A no host bar will be provided.   Live music, raffle drawings and a silent auction will be part of the night’s excitement.
     Tickets are $45 in advance or $50 at the door.
     Advance tickets are available at the Silver Whiskers Thrift store at 118 S. Silver… Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce, Deming Animal Clinic, and Sunshine Grooming.

     Deming Animal Guardians’ goal is to improve the lives of animals by making spay and neuter surgeries more affordable through coupons and mobile veterinary vans.
     In addition to fundraising, Deming Animal Guardians accepts donations, which are tax deductible, and they sell memberships.  A regular yearly membership is $15, with discounts for seniors and children.

Close of Voter Registration Absentee/Early Voting Hours

(Deming) - County Clerk Andrea Rodriguez has announced voter registration for the November 6, 2018 General Election will close at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018. 
    All qualified electors duly registered on or before October 9, 2018 are eligible to cast a ballot in the upcoming General Election.
    Tuesday, October 9 is also the first day a voter may cast a paper absentee ballot or vote on an electronic voting system in the clerk’s office.  
    The last day for early voting in the clerk’s office is Saturday, November 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  
    Voters may also request an application and absentee ballot to be mailed to them.  The last day the clerk may mail an absentee ballot to an applicant is Friday November 2, 2018.
