Local Crime Report for Friday September 29, 2017

(Deming) - Here's the area crime report:
     Asencion Salas, age 54, was arrested for criminal sexual penetration and two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor… Miguel Almaraz, age 19, was arrested for battery on a household member…
     Ronald Carroll, age 49, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Angel Valenzuela, age 20, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Brandon Vaughn, age 30, of Tulsa, OK, was arrested on a District Court warrant for violating conditions of release… Nicky Alvarado, age 26, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines and on a Grant County warrant for failure to appear… Brenda Ramos, age 36, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…
     Allen Alfred, Jr., age 23, was cited for shoplifting at Dollar General… and a 17-year-old boy was cited for battery.

Man Arrested for Shooting at Occupied Car

(Deming) – A Deming man was arrested Thursday night for shooting at a car with two people inside.
     Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said 25-year-old Mark Almanza was arrested for shooting at an occupied vehicle, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a felon.
     Orosco said the shooting occurred at just after 7 p.m. Thursday in the area of Slate and Pear streets, where his officers found the back window of a blue Jeep shattered.
     The two occupants of the Jeep said they were driving in the area when they heard a shot, then heard the back window of their Jeep shatter, then heard additional shots.
     They identified Almanza as the shooter and described the blue Chevrolet car he was driving.
     Orosco said the investigation is continuing, but no motive for the shooting was immediately revealed.
     No one was injured.

WNMU Event Planned in Deming

(Deming) – The date of the annual Western New Mexico University “In Your Community” event for Deming has been announced.
     WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard and others will be here Friday, October 13th, at Luna County Courthouse Park.
     The event will begin with Dr. Shepard’s State of the University address at 4:30 p.m., during which he will update community members on WNMU happenings.
     The address will be followed by an outdoor social with music, games, refreshments and informational booths.
     The event is scheduled from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
     Everyone is welcome.

Silver Health Care Awarded Money for Solar

(Deming) – A Deming medical office is one beneficiary of regional renewable energy projects funded through the USDA Rural Energy for America Program.
     Silver Health Care’s Dr. James Skee received five awards for installing solar power systems at five different health care clinics, including the Deming clinic.
     USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Eric Vigil said Silver Health Care’s Deming clinic was awarded over $37,000 in a Rural Energy for America Program grant to purchase and install a solar array on its roof at 1511 S. Lime Street.
     Vigil said the health care facility will save nearly $11,000 annually in electric costs, which helps increase the viability of their Deming operation.
     He applauded Silver Health Care and other beneficiaries for taking advantage of available grant funding to help pay for renewable energy systems.

PNM Alerts to Intermittent Outages Friday

(Deming) – PNM officials are alerting customers to possible intermittent outages Friday morning.
     Line Department Supervisor Dale Stevens said the outages tie back to the severe lightning storm on the night of August 12th which caused a fire in the PNM Hondale substation, located at the intersection of Sunshine Road and 8th Street.
     Stevens said that this Friday, September 29th, PNM crews will be performing switching procedures to transfer the load to a mobile substation which has been installed at that location.
     Customers on Sunshine Road west of Columbus Road to 8th Street and south to Hondale Road may experience intermittent outages of one to two hours in duration Friday.
     Customers on and around Columbus Road from Pear Street south to Elote Road should expect a single outage of 10-15 minutes in duration.
     Stevens said these outages will occur between the hours of 8 a.m.-noon Friday, and they thank customers for their patience during the switching procedure.

(Deming) - Here's the area crime report:
     Jorge Legarde, age 53, was arrested for aggravated DUI and was cited for a failure-to-maintain-lane driving violation… Alejandro De Jesus, age 56, was arrested for drunkenness and interference with officers… Tomas Esparza, age 23, was arrested on a District Court warrant for violating conditions of release… and Joseph Conklin, age 48, was arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to appear.
     In juvenile news, a criminal summons was issued to a 14-year-old boy for battery on a school employee and public affray… and a criminal summons was issued to a 15-year-old boy for public affray.
     And in other news, a tool bag containing tools valued at $600 was taken from a residence off S. Ruby… and a sander, spray gun and drill, with a combined value of nearly $400, were taken from a residence off S. Nickel.

 Richard Bermudez, age 39, charged with public drunkenness…   Shana Chavez, age 30, arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to appear…  Jose Carrillo, age 34, charged with a Luna County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear and possession of a controlled substance methamphetamines…  Isaac Zavala, age 41, arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to appear..  Curtis Angel, age 26, arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to appear…  Isaac Garcia, age 22, arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Juan Islas, age 25, summoned to court for robbery, and abuse of a child…   Pablo Espinoza, age 19, cited for possession of marijuana under an ounce…   Jesus Hernandez, age 24, cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
​     In other reports, Criminal damage to a 2016 GMC Canyon occurred at the Walmart parking lot after the vehicles left rear panel was damaged estimated damage listed as $500…   A case of fraud was reported after a 71 year old Deming man reported he sent $2100 to a person in Mexico via Western Union who advised he was a family member in need of assistance.

Luna County Well Water Testing Saturday

(Deming) – Luna County property owners are invited to have their well-water tested Saturday at no charge.
     Luna County Extension Program Director Jack Blandford said the program is sponsored by the Luna County Extension Service, the New Mexico Environment Department and the New Mexico Department of Health for Luna County residents with private wells serving homes not connected to a public water utility.
     Up to 200 wells will be tested at no charge for electrical conductivity, sulfate, nitrate, pH, fluoride, arsenic, and iron.
     The free well-water testing will take place this Saturday, September 30th, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Luna County Extension Office, 210-B Poplar Street in Deming.
     To collect a water sample, let the water run for two to three minutes before collecting the sample, and collect the water before it runs through any water treatments or filters.
     Fill a clean glass or plastic container with at least a quart or liter of well water, and collect the sample as close to the time of testing as possible.
     Specialists will be collecting information about the well such as GPS coordinates, depth, casing material and distance from well to the nearest septic tank or leach-field system, all information is voluntary.

DAC Artist Studio Tour This Weekend

(Deming) – The Deming Arts Center has the artists’ studio tour this weekend. 
        The tour will be Saturday September 30th and Sunday October 1st.
     A brochure has been created for people taking the tour and are available at the Deming Visitor’s Center and the Deming Arts Center 100 S. Gold in Deming.

Deming High School Prepares for Homecoming

(Deming) - The Deming High School Homecoming parade will take place on Thursday, September 28th. It will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and is expected to end at 6:45 p.m.  
     All floats will convene on Platinum and Spruce.  They will head West on Spruce to Gold, South on Gold to Ash, West on Ash to Nickel, South on Nickel to Wildcat Drive ending at the High School. 
    The public is invited to show support of the Wildcats by enjoying the 2017 Homecoming Parade. 

     After the parade, the Cats will have a powder puff football game, followed by a community bond fire on the north side of the football field.   
    The Wildcats with a record of 3 and 2 will be hosting the #1 ranked undefeated Belen Eagles for the Homecoming Football game Friday night starting at around 7 p.m. from Wildcat Stadium.  
    The traditional dance also part of homecoming week will be held Saturday night from 8-12 a.m. in the new High School Cafeteria.
