DEMING – Here’s today’s arrest and crime report.
     Juan Regalado, age 19, charged with aggravated fleeing from law enforcement, aggravated DWI, resisting evading eluding officers, concealing identity, minor allowing self to be served alcohol, no driver’s license expired registration and no insurance…  Allen Adams, age 48, arrested for aggravated DWI, open container and no proof of insurance…  Andrew Helbig, age 50, or T or C, NM arrested for DUI, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamines and possession of drug paraphernalia…  Carlos Randell, age 27, arrested for trespassing and interfering with officers and possession of drug paraphernalia… Adolfo Grado, age 46, charged with battery on a household member… Julian Regaldo, age 21, charged with battery on a household member…  Ismael Galvan, age 54, charged with battery on a household member, false imprisonment and violating a protection order…  Angel Lucero, age 22, charged with disorderly conduct…  Shannon Relyea, age 49, charged with trespassing and on a Grant County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…   Isaiah Sotelo, age 29, arrested on a Grant County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Adrian DeLaRosa, age 26, arrested on an Otero County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Robert Gamboa, age 35, of Las Cruces, NM arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Michael Mendoza, age 45, arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole warrant for probation violations…  Larry Hernandez, age 35, arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Ismael Delgado, age 19, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear.
   In police reports:  a 1989 Mercury passenger vehicle valued at $2,500 was reported taken from a residence on Spruce Street.  $200 in damage was reported to a window on South Zinc Street.  Finally, a weed burner valued at $125 was reported taken from a residence on East Spruce Street.  

Healing House Shelter Undergoes Renovations

​DEMING - Luna County’s Domestic Violence Shelter, The Healing House announced recently that the interior remodeling of the offices and shelter is underway. 
     The local domestic violence shelter is using funding received through the State Legislature in the form of Capital Outlay monies.  
     A media release said that the purpose is to help their clients escape domestic violence and to provide a safe and secure environment for them. The ongoing goal is for the clients to have a beneficial and healing experience during their stay at the local shelter.  
    The media release said that feeling a sense of security in a beautiful shelter promotes a stronger sense of well-being and lessens the impact from the trauma they have endured.  
     In 2020, The Luna County Healing House provided shelter services for 75 adults and 55 children. 
     During the onset of the renovations, The Friends of the Healing House stepped in to cover the expenses to shelter clients in hotels from May 9th to May 31, 2021. They also supported the shelter by providing $5,000.00 for educational toys, activities, swing sets, bookshelves, and other needed items.   

19-year-old Deming man charged in local murder

​DEMING - On Friday August 27th at about 5:14 p.m., Deming police officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of South Silver St. in reference to an unresponsive female. Officers arrived on scene and located the body of 18-year-old Ashley Sherlyn Celis who, had been stabbed multiple times.
    According to a media release from the Deming Police Department, a suspect was developed and identified as 19-year-old Alexis Flores, the decedents boyfriend. It was determined that Mr. Flores had fled the scene with Ms. Celis’ two young children who were later located in a vehicle near the Port of Entry in Columbus. Both children were uninjured.
  Flores was located walking back into the United States from Palomas, Mexico. He was subsequently interviewed and confessed to the murder of Ms. Celis. Flores was charged with one count of Murder in the First Degree, one count of Injury to a Pregnant Woman, one count of Tampering with Evidence, two counts of Abandonment or Abuse of a Child and one count of False Imprisonment.
    He appeared before Magistrate Judge Ray Baese Monday who at this time set no bond and Flores is awaiting the next court date.

DEMING – Here's the local arrest and crime report: 
     Socorro Ramos, age 25, arrested for possession of a controlled substance, driving with a suspended or revoked license and possession of drug paraphernalia...   Everett Tindale, age 40, arrested for possession of a controlled substance methamphetamines, possession of drug paraphernalia and for receiving or transferring stolen property allegedly a flatbed trailer that has recently been reported as stolen... Hector Medina, age 49, was arrested for aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon and battery on a peace officer... Brian Mendoza, age 20, arrested on two Magistrate warrants both for failure to appear...  Cristal Aceves, age 32, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines... Sammy Torres, age 49, arrested on a Magistrate warrant and a Municipal warrant both for failure to appear...  Shannon Relyea, age 49, arrested for disorderly conduct, loitering and causing an affray... Nacles Hernandez, age 36, arrested for interference with officers and reckless driving...  Carlos Ransdell, age 27, arrested for trespassing, interfering with officers and possession of drug paraphernalia.  In juvenile reports, a 14-year-old boy was charged with battery on a household member. 
   In police reports, a local store and employee were the victims of fraud after sending over $2000 in gift cards to a caller who pretended to be an upper manager of the retail store chain.     The store lost about $600, and the employee sent over $1400 personally.  The case remains under investigation. 

Local Unemployment Drops Slightly in July

DEMING-- Luna County's unemployment rate in July was lower than the June revised rate, and we continue to top the state in the number of residents out of work.

reliminary figures from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions show Luna County with an July unemployment rate of 14.3%.
    
That figure is the lower than the June revised rate, and also down from last July 2020’s rate of 19.9%.
   
Following Luna County in the list of New Mexico counties with the worst unemployment is Lea County with 10.3%.
     
Those were the only two counties in the state with unemployment greater than 10%. 
     
In our area: Grant County had 8.2% unemployment in July, Hidalgo County had 5.8%, and the 
Las Cruces area had 7.8%. The county with the least unemployment remains Los Alamos with 3.5%. 
     The state unemployment rate for October – at 5.4%– was down slightly from the June 
revised rate of 5.9%. 
​   The New Mexico labor force estimates 
show Luna County with a labor force of 11,089 – with 9,507 employed and 1,582 unemployed.
 

Luna County Seeks Public Input on Capital Improvement Plan

​DEMING – The New Mexico State coordinated Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP) encourages New Mexico cities and counties to plan for the development of capital improvements.   
     The goal of this ICIP is for entities to plan ahead so they do not find themselves in emergency situations, but instead can plan for, find, and develop infrastructure at a pace that can sustain growth and activities.  
     Luna County is currently working on the ICIP for the years 2023 through 2027 and is seeking public input. 
     All interested parties are invited to submit project ideas by providing supporting data, photos, testimony and other pertinent information to the County Commissioners.  
     For more information on the ICIP call Premal Patel, Luna County Planning director at 543-6641.  Project ideas and comments need to be submitted before September 3, 2021. 

Two Deming Teens Killed in Rollover Accident Wednesday 08/24/21

DEMING – Luna County Sheriff’s deputies and Officers from the New Mexico State Police responded to a call of a single vehicle rollover accident south of Deming on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021. The accident was at McCan and Sunshine roads. 
    The Deming Headlight reported that the vehicle a 2006 Nissan passenger vehicle was driven by Alexa Arely Trevizo, 18, of Deming and the passenger was Amanda Marie Saenz, 18, also of Deming.  
   
Both youths were ejected from the vehicle and both suffered fatal injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. 

    The state police initial investigation report indicated the vehicle left the roadway and rolled several times. It is not known why the vehicle left the roadway. 
    Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor and seatbelts do not appear to have been worn.  
    This crash is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police. 

Gila National Forest Sponsoring Free Dark Sky Photography Class

DEMING - Have you ever looked at dark sky photographs and wonder how the photographer managed to capture such beautiful imagery? Well, the Gila National Forest wants to help you with some fun tips on how to take night sky photos. 
     The Gila National Forest is hosting a free Dark Sky Photography Class on September 3 from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m.  You don't need a fancy expensive camera to participate. Amateur photographer and FS volunteer Deborah Calkins will teach you how to use your camera to take beautiful night sky photographs. Class size is limited to fifteen people, ages 12 and up.  You must sign up to participate. The class will be held at Fort Bayard. Please contact Glenwood RD Recreation Program Manager via email at ellyse.deldin@usda.gov before August 30, 2021 at 4:00 p.m.
​     Selection process will be made by September 1 and you will be notified via email and sent an email and the time and place to meet. A number will be assigned to entries and a random number generator will be used if the forest receives more than fifteen applicants.

     Jorge Enriquez, age 29, arrested for fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officers, a District Court warrant for failure to appear, and a District Court warrant for violating conditions of release… Miguel Padilla, age 24, arrested for aggravated battery on a household member… Justin Booqua, age 30 of Zuni Pueblo, was arrested for driving with a suspended or revoked license, illegal use of license plates, no proof of registration and no insurance…  Alvar Aguirre, age 30, was arrested for battery on a peace officer, aggravated DWI, improper equipment, driver nor licensed, no insurance and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer…  Raymond Guess, age 39, arrested for interference with officers and on a Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear… Carlos Ransdell, age 27, arrested for disorderly conduct and larceny…  Avelardo Gallosa, age 33, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Anita Baeza, age 37, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Jesus Ayala, age 20, aggravated assault against a household member, aggravated battery on a household member with a deadly weapon and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…  Conrad Villegas, age 37, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Araceli Rodriguez, age 41, arrested on a Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear…
   Graffiti damage in the amount of $100 was done to a metal fence on South Iron Street.  Windows on an apartment building on 8th Street NW, were damaged value listed at $115.   A 1989 Ford F 150 was stolen from Bosque Rd SE the vehicle was valued at $2000. Solar panels and other items inside the pickup were valued at $3000 with a total loss listed at $5,000.  Two firearms including an .22 long riffle, batteries, and a trailer with a total value listed at $5,950 was taken from a location off of Rockhound Road.  Finally, a 23-year-old Deming male found himself victim of fraud after he gave $3,800 in debit cards to a scammer who said he had won a scholarship to the University of England.  

Deming Investment Manager Charged with Fraud

DEMING – Carter Bain Wealth Management company in Deming is entangled in allegations of fraudulent securities offerings by investment manager Martin A. Ruiz of New York.
     
The Deming Headlight and Las Cruces Sun News reports that Ruiz was arrested in New York on Aug. 12, accused of defrauding over a dozen of his Deming clients of more than $10 million since 2011.
 
Prosecutors allege Ruiz misappropriated retirement funds by transferring them under his control for personal use, including home purchases in New York and Santa Fe, along with credit card and student debts.
   
Ruiz has been charged with a single count of investment adviser fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment. 
     
It’s alleged that Ruiz swindled at least 56 investors, including elderly clients, by telling them that he would invest their money in commercial loans and real estate.
    
Permanent injunctions and recovery of the money is being sought with interest and civil penalties against Ruiz, his Carter Bain franchise.
