DEMING - Deming Public Schools has made the decision to continue school online with 100% eLearning model until December 18, 2020. eLearning continues to be the best option for protecting the health and safety of our Deming Public Schools community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting in January families will have the option to continue the remote eLearning or start the hybrid model of instruction. The hybrid model will be phased in depending on updated information from the Governor’s Office and the New Mexico Department of Health. “Deming Public School will continue to stay in a remote learning environment through the semester. We will continue to re-evaluate as we receive more information.” said Dr. Arsenio Romero, Deming Public Schools Superintendent “In the coming weeks and months, it is possible that we will be bringing more students with IEPs, more primary students, and more at-risk students back to campus for face-to-face learning. We will start slowly and safely. This will ensure that our school procedures work, that we continue to limit contact exposure, but also respond to our students needs.”
If you have any questions please contact your school or the district at (575) 546-8841.
All plans are subject to change pending New Mexico Department of Health orders.

Luna County COVID-19 Cases Jump by 32 - Due to Holding Hidalgo County Inmates

8/27/2020

Picture
DEMING – Local authorities were shocked Thursday when the New Mexico Department of Health posted recent COVID-19 cases, and Luna County’s numbers had climbed by 32.
However, after investigating, Luna County Manager Chris Brice told Deming Radio News that the increase in Luna County numbers were a result of the local Detention Center accepting inmates transferred from Hidalgo County.
As part of a mutual aid agreement between Luna and Hidalgo Counties, Deming has been training staff from Lordsburg, and to facilitate that training, all inmates that were housed in the Hidalgo County Detention Center, were transferred to the Luna County Detention Center August 19th.
Brice said that they had been told that the inmates had tested negative in Hidalgo county however, upon arrival in Luna County, the inmates were all given COVID-19 safety measures tests.       The results were 21 additional positive cases from the Hidalgo inmates, 8 additional positive tests from Luna County inmates, and 1 additional positive case from a Sierra County inmate.
Brice said it appears that the 21 Hidalgo County positive tests were attributed to Luna County incorrectly, and he would be in contact with the State Health Department to see if the numbers could be corrected.  He added that Luna County’s recent COVID-19 cases had been good.
Upon completion of the staff training, all inmates will be returned to Hidalgo County with ongoing training and guidance being provided by Luna County Detention Staff.

Recovery Council Urges Local Businesses to Apply for Loan Program

8/26/2020

Picture
SANTA FE—Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Economic Recovery Council is urging small businesses that have been hard hit by the COVID-19 public health emergency to apply for an emergency loan program now available through the New Mexico Finance Authority.
The Small Business Recovery Act of 2020 set aside $400 million from the New Mexico’s Severance Tax Permanent Fund to provide loans to New Mexico businesses and nonprofits that have experienced financial hardship during the pandemic.
“This is a great opportunity for businesses to get some critical help that could make the difference in being able to navigate through this very difficult period,” said Economic Recovery Council Chairwoman Christina Campos.
“It’s so important for our recovery that our state’s small businesses get through this.” “This is a program that is especially beneficial for small businesses that may not have been able to access federal relief or who need more flexibility. We’d love to see more businesses take advantage of what is available,” added Councilmember Jason Sandel.
Businesses may be eligible for loans of up to $75,000. The loans do not require a personal guarantee or collateral and carry an interest rate currently set at 1.625 percent, fixed for the life of the loan. The loans can be used to cover rent, payroll, and other expenses. Among other criteria, to be eligible, applicants:
• Must be a New Mexico business or a nonprofit corporation organized under Section 501(c)3 or 501(c)6 that has closed or reduced operations due to the public health order, and
• Had annual gross revenue of less than $5 million as determined by its 2019 federal income tax return or Form 990, and
• Experienced a 30% decline in monthly gross receipts or monthly revenue in April and May of 2020 as compared to the same months in 2019. Applications are being processed on a first-come, first-served basis. To learn more and to apply, go to the New Mexico Finance Authority website at www.nmfinance.com.
