Columbus Gazebo Fundraiser Set for Saturday

8/30/2018

Picture
(Columbus) – Residents of Columbus are planning a fundraiser Saturday to help restore the gazebo in the village’s historic plaza.
The gazebo, torn down a few years ago because of hazardous conditions, was once an important gathering place and landmark for the village, famous for being attacked by Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.
The plaza dates back to the town's raid by Villa in 1916, when 18 Americans and scores of Villa's fighters died.  U.S. Army General John "Black Jack" Pershing chased Villa back into Mexico but never caught him.
A “Rebuild the Gazebo” fundraiser is set for this Saturday, September 1st, from 4-10 p.m. in downtown Columbus.
There will be face-painting, children’s games, a dunking booth with local officials, music, and food vendors. Donations will be accepted.
Columbus is located 30 miles south of Deming, and three miles north of Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico.
     Call 575-343-0147 for more information.

(Deming) – Deming MainStreet officials are saying this month’s National Night Out resulted in the highest turn-out rate ever recorded for a three-hour event at Luna County Courthouse Park.
Although the organization’s media release did not specify an estimated number of attendees for the August 7th event, the release did credit collaboration among a number of organizations for the evening’s success.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police/community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
It also provides an opportunity to bring law enforcement officers and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Now in its 35th year across the nation, the evening’s focus is on heightening crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generating support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, and sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Deming MainStreet officials said approximately 40 businesses, organizations, schools, government entities and law enforcement providers participated in the Deming event.

School Bus Evacuation Drills Set for Wednesday

8/28/2018

Picture
(Deming) – Parents of school bus riders, take note: your child may be a little late getting home Wednesday.
Deming Public Schools’ Director of Transportation Frank Milo said his department will be holding mandatory front-door bus evacuation drill exercises Wednesday, August 29th.
Milo said the drill will involve bus drivers having students get on the bus, then pulling the bus forward a minimum of 10-feet, stopping, instructing students on what to do, and then having students exit the bus.
Students will be instructed to walk a minimum of 75-feet away from the front of the bus, assuming the issue is toward the rear of the bus.
Milo said some drills will take place in the morning, but most will be Wednesday afternoon.
He estimates buses may be delayed by 10-15 minutes.
Again, parents or guardians of school bus riders should expect some bus delays Wednesday afternoon as drivers hold mandatory bus evacuation drill exercises.

Johnson Answers Locals’ Questions about Race

8/28/2018

(Deming) – Libertarian Senate Candidate Gary Johnson appeared at a public event in Luna County Monday – just two weeks after officially entering the race.
The event at St. Clair Winery was hosted by local Libertarian Rebecca Lescombes, and gave residents a chance to find out what Johnson is bringing to the race as he attempts to unseat incumbent Sen. Martin Heinrich.
Johnson, a two-term New Mexico governor, said his biggest issue is the nation’s deficit, estimated at $833 billion, and the looming consequences of the country’s unchecked spending.
He said he was concerned there were no reductions in spending to go along with President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.
Johnson, who described himself at fiscally conservative and socially liberal, said as an elected Libertarian he could serve as a swing vote in the Senate.
He added that he would like to see what he called “Uber-everything,” meaning a business-model shift in the country to consumer-driven on-demand service providers that are not subsidized with government dollars – the model successfully used by Uber’s on-demand transportation system.
