Keep Luna County Beautiful Seeks Volunteers

(Deming) – Keep Luna County Beautiful is calling for volunteers and organizations of all ages to lend a helping hand in keeping our community clean and beautiful.
     Local Organizers remind the public that the bi-annual Keep Luna County beautiful trash clean up day is set for October 28.  
     Volunteers will meet at the courthouse park at 8 a.m., and  will be assigned areas of the county for trash pick up.   Volunteers will receive vests, gloves, trash bags and water to use during the clean up.  Then afterwards a community picnic in the park provided by Aramark.   Prizes will also be drawn to be given away to participants. 
     Keep Luna County Beautiful would like to get an idea of how many persons and groups would be able to participate again this year so they can have enough safety items on hand for everyone.

     Last year this event took 15 thousand pounds of trash off Luna County roadways. 

Charter School Hosting Lunch for Parents

(Deming) – Friday is Parent-Teacher Conference Day in the Deming Public School system, and that includes Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School.
     But the charter school is adding a new motivation for parents to attend: a free lunch. 
     Charter school officials said parent-teacher conferences will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, September 1st.
     And parents are encouraged to join teachers and staff for lunch that day from 12 to 2 p.m.
     Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School is located at 315 East First Street.

(Deming) – Here’s today’s local crime report:
     Luis Jose Romero, age 36, arrested for DWI, resisting evading or obstructing an officer, improper lane and tampering with evidence…Elgin R. Newton, age 52, arrested on a Magistrate warrant and a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Leticia Mosqueda, age 35, arrested on a District court arrest warrant… Noah Jimenez, age 37, charged with a District court warrant for probation violations…  Ramon Miranda, age 38, charged with theft of credit card and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…   Martha Madrid, age 29, cited for driving with a revoked license, no insurance and no registration…  Travis Richmond, age 35, cited for battery against a household member. 
     In other reports, around $500 worth of tools and other items were taken from a residence on S. Tin Street.   

​Two Detention Center Inmates Charged with Assisting in Escape

(Deming) -  Two Deming men who are already incarcerated in the Luna County Detention Center have been charged for assisting in the escape of inmate earlier this month.  
     Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco told Deming Radio news that additional felony charges were put on Matthew Baca, age 20 and Daven Plemmons, age 28 both of Deming for assisting in an escape from custody, and conspiracy. 
     Orosco said both men aided 40 year old Joshua Mirka in his escape from the Luna County Detention Center Monday night August 14th.  The two allegedly assisted by boosting the inmate up a wall in the east recreation yard. 
     Jail officials said both men were being held on drug charges and warrants.
     Luna County Manager Ira Pearson said that the recreation yard is still being used due to inmates having the right to be given recreation time, however they have added additional security measures with structure and manpower. 
     Magistrate Judge Ray Baese held an arraignment hearing Tuesday for both men and set a no bond order.  Baca and Plemmons will eventually be bound over to District Court with no dates scheduled yet.  

​Deming High School Changes Parent/Teachers Meeting Combines Open House

(Deming)  -  In an effort to give parents the opportunity to visit the new Deming High School, High school officials have decided that they will be holding their parent-teacher meetings one day earlier.   Thursday, August 31st,  the new Deming High school will be holding an open house/Meet and Greet along with a parent teacher conference day. 
     A flyer released from High school officials says, Join us Thursday evening!  Meet your children’s teachers and tour our beautiful new school” This event will replace the Parent/Teacher Conference originally scheduled for this Friday!
     Regular class schedule will be held Thursday along with the open house – Meet and Greet from 4 p.m. until 7:45 p.m.
     Deming Radio News checked with the High School office and was told basically, there will be two parent teacher conference days at the new High school.
     No classes on Friday for the regular Parent Teacher Conference day, and also schools will be closed on Monday September 1st for Labor day. 

​Former Luna County Sheriff James Clay Passes

(Deming) - James McKinny Clay, a longtime resident of Deming passed away Saturday August 26, 2017 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital.
 
Jim was born March 19, 1941 in Olney, Texas.  He entered the United States Air Force in 1959 and after his service to the country he worked as a livestock hauler in Texas and Arizona.
 
He came to Deming in the early 1970’s and being that he always had an interest in Law Enforcement he began his career and eventually served in all capacities with the Luna County Sheriff’s Office.  He worked with the Luna County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years in which during that time he was elected Sheriff and served 3 terms in that office.
 
He is survived by his wife Linda Clay, daughters Debra, Shawna, Melissa, and Catherine; son Jason; sisters Beverly, Nancy and Nedra; 10 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
 
A celebration of his life will be Friday, September 1, 2017 at 10:30 in the morning at CitiLife Church with Pastor Cesar Chavez officiating.

(Deming) - Here's the area crime report:
     Charles Ghan, age 52, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for possession of a controlled substance… Christopher Salas, age 34, of Silver City, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Arturo Bravo, age 58, was arrested on a District Court warrant for failure to pay fines… Julio Gonzalez, age 44, was arrested on two Dona Ana County warrants and a Municipal warrant – all for failure to pay fines… Jasmine Gonzales, age 19, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Linda Moshier, age 52, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Briana Ramirez, age 22, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… and a 15-year-old girl was charged with aggravated stalking.
     Also, a 2002 Dodge four-door pickup valued at $8,000 was reported stolen from a location off E. Pear… $500 in criminal damage to a barbed-wire fence was reported off Rockhound Road SW… and a window valued at $250 was broken on a building off the Columbus Hwy.

Community Food Project Meetings Planned

(Deming) – The public is invited to attend community meetings this week on gardening and community food projects, sponsored by Healthy Kids Healthy Luna County.
     The meetings are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30th, and 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 31st.
     All meetings will be held in the Luna County Courthouse basement.
     Thursday’s meeting will be in conjunction with the Growing Food Connections project, in which Luna County has participated for the last three years to promote the local food system.
     Despite having a strong agricultural industry in the area, Luna County is considered a “food desert” by the United States Department of Agriculture, meaning there are a significant number of low-income residents without close access to grocery stores.
     Luna County has been working to address these issues through Healthy Kids Healthy Luna County, the Growing Food Connections project, and through participation in the regional Southwest Food Policy Council. 
     Refreshments will be served at all of the meetings.

Luna County Pitches In for Houston

(Deming) – A drive to gather items for residents of the Houston area affected by Hurricane Harvey is underway in Deming.
     The Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce newsletter said non-perishable food and other items are being collected at Peppers Supermarket and Inner Champion Nutrition through Wednesday, August 30th.
     Suggested items include canned vegetables and fruits… water… baby food, diapers and wipes… blankets and towels… and dog and cat food.
     Hughes Oilfield Transportation is donating the semi-truck and gasoline to take the food and household items to Houston.
     Again, drop-off locations are Peppers Supermarket, 812 E. Florida Street, and Inner Champion Nutrition, 1212 Columbus Road.
     Donated items will be accepted through Wednesday, August 30th.

     Wesley Samuel, age 64, of Columbus, was arrested for DUI, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia… Emmanuel Nevarez, age 32, was arrested for battery against a household member, interfering with communications and on two counts of causing criminal damage to the property of a household member…
     Ray Chavez, age 22, was arrested for driving while license was suspended or revoked, speeding, on a registration violation and no proof of insurance… Moises Contreras, age 24, was arrested for concealing identity, interfering with officers and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Joshua Saenz, age 24, was arrested for driving while license was suspended or revoked…
     Ismael Espinoza, age 23, was arrested on two District Court warrants for probation violations… Mireya Bustamante, age 19, of Carlsbad, was arrested on an Eddy County warrant for failure to pay fines… and Allen Alfred, Jr., age 23, was cited for trespassing at a business.
     In juvenile news: a 17-year-old boy was charged with felony larceny, trespassing and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer… and two girls – one age 14 and one age 13 – were cited for public affray.
     And in other news: two video gaming consoles and silver coins, with a combined value of $850, were taken from a residence off Calle Ricardo… and $500 in criminal damage occurred to a pickup parked off S. Nickel after its front fender was scratched.
