(Deming) – Parents of Deming High School students interested in more information on the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment results are invited to an informational meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Principal Janean Garney said parents of current 11th and 12th grade students should have received their child’s SBA scores in the mail in the past few weeks.

Reportedly, roughly two-thirds of current seniors have not passed the SBA and are not on target to receive their high school diploma upon the successful completion of their required courses.

That has many parents in the community concerned.

There are still opportunities for seniors to pass the SBA, which will be administered again in October, or to complete an alternative requirement.

Garney said parents of current 11th and 12th graders who would like more information on the SBA results and requirements are encouraged to attend Monday’s meeting, set to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Deming High School all-purpose room.

SNMSF Officials Encourage Entries    8/22/13    10:48a

(Deming) – Southern New Mexico State Fair officials are working to correct misconceptions about entries in the Las Cruces fair.

Veteran’s Building Superintendent Sharon Sevachko said some people have been led to believe that entering non-livestock items in the fair requires membership or special invitations.

     Sevachko said that is untrue.

She said any resident of Luna, Hidalgo, Catron, Grant, Otero, Sierra or Dona Ana counties in New Mexico, or El Paso County in Texas, can enter any artwork, garden produce, photographs, ceramics, canning, baking, quilting, sewing, knitting, crafting, woodwork, metal work and more.

Sevachko said the entry must have been created during the previous year.

Most entries will be accepted on Monday, September 30th, with the exception of baking, which will be accepted on Wednesday, October 2nd, adult photography, which will be accepted on Saturday, September 28th, and quilting entries which will be accepted on Sunday, September 29th.

(Deming) – Details remain sketchy, but apparently a body was found in a burned car Monday morning off State Road 26 or the Hatch Highway.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez said officers responded to an incident near the five-mile post on the Hatch Highway at about 9:45 Monday morning.

Gutierrez said a vehicle caught fire while traveling east. At some point the car left the roadway and struck a fence.

Gutierrez said that after the fire was extinguished by local fire fighters, a deceased body was located in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.  Gutierrez said the deceased has yet to be positively identified and cause of death has not been released.

Initial reports from other motorists indicated that the fire was inside the vehicle and not in the engine area.

The case has been turned over to the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau for further investigation.

Residents Apply for Columbus Charter School

8/21/2013

Comments

(Deming) – The state Public Education Commission met in Columbus Wednesday morning to hear community input on a proposal for a new charter school.

This is the third year parents and community activists have applied for a charter school in Columbus to serve students in mid-high and high school.  This year’s application would have the school start with sixth graders.

Previously, Columbus Elementary served students in kindergarten through sixth grade, but the Deming School Board recently voted to begin bussing sixth graders to Deming to help alleviate overcrowding in the elementary.

The application for the Columbus Community School, as it is being called, says a number of parents have requested high school classes in Columbus so their students don’t have to be bussed to Deming.

Organizers want to use the Ben Archer Medical facility, Village of Columbus playground and pool, village community center and parts of the former Columbus Elementary school to deliver the mid-high and high school curriculum.

They also plan to locate portable classrooms on two acres of vacant land which could be home to the school’s permanent site.

Charter schools are public schools freed from some traditional educational requirements to help them offer innovative programs.

Deming has one charter high school – Cesar Chavez – which met for a period in the former City Drug building off Spruce Street and now meets in the former Martin Elementary School building off East First Street.
