Air Marine Pilots Assist in Rescue of Stranded Hiker in the Gila

7/27/2021

Picture
DEMING – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air Marine Operations aircrew helped Mesilla Valley Rescue and New Mexico Search and Rescue locate and aid a stranded hiker Monday in the Gila National Forest in Southeastern, New Mexico.
The hiker, an adult male and U.S. citizen, had become trapped for four days in an area of the forest due to heavy rains and flash floods.  A search and rescue aircraft was requested in an attempt to locate the missing hiker.
The search and rescue teams were able to coordinate the rescue operation with the AMO AS-350 helicopter, which was deployed out of a Deming Air Unit. This aircraft can lift personnel in and out of difficult terrain. The search and rescue teams had an air band radio and were coordinating with the AMO pilots in the search and rescue attempt.
After being airborne for a little more than one hour, at approximately 9:35 a.m. MDT, the AS-350 aircrew were able to locate the stranded hiker, landed the aircraft near his position, and were able to provide food, water and render first aid. The aircrew did an assessment on the hiker who had been injured in the head when he lost his footing and fell after being caught in a flash flood.
The AS-350 aircraft then lifted off to guide the rescue teams on ATVs to the sight where they treated and subsequently transported the rescued hiker to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
“Our region has some rugged terrain and dramatic weather that can often strand people who enjoy the many national parks in this part of the country,” said John Stonehouse, AMO El Paso Air Branch Director.  “Our CBP pilots and search and rescues personnel on the ground are often the difference between life and death to those caught up in flash floods or in the desert heat. I am very proud of the air-ground team that made this search and rescue mission a life-saving success.”

Open Letter to Luna County Citizens from Sheriff Kelly Ganaway

7/26/2021

Picture
On July 23rd, I received a call in reference to a phone scam.  The caller used my name, Sheriff Kelly Gannaway and my office, Luna County Sheriff's Office, to advise the receiving party that was called, there was a warrant for her husband's arrest, the phone scam caller even had the name of the person they were talking with and used a local phone number.

This is definitely a phone scam!  The Luna County Sheriff's Office does not solicit citizens over the telephone to inquire about warrants, and how to take care of them.

If you are contacted with this type of scam being used, do not give them any information and contact the Luna County Sheriff's Office.
