Local Crime Report for Tuesday July 31, 2018

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Damian Badgewell, age 20, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for battery against a household member, breaking and entering, and extortion… Argenis Gomez, age 29, of El Paso, TX, was arrested on a Lincoln County warrant for failure to appear… and Cynthia Gallegos, age 53, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines.
     Also, carpet valued at $700 was cut out of an unoccupied home off Carlota Rd… and a 31-year-old Deming woman reported being the victim of identity theft after learning someone in Deming was using her social security number without authorization.



Cowboy Held Up at Gunpoint for Horse

(Deming) – A Columbus man who had been gathering cattle on horseback reported being stopped Monday by two men with a gun who demanded his horse.
     Luna County Sheriff’s Captain Jose Martinez said the incident reportedly occurred west of Black Hill between Columbus and the international boundary.
     Martinez said the victim reported that his horse would not cooperate for the thieves, so the men forced him at gunpoint to lead the horse while they rode approximately two miles north to a fence, where the men dismounted, hopped the fence, and fled.
     The victim also said he was hit by one of the men during the incident.
     Martinez said officials were unsuccessful in locating the two men.


Luna Targeted for Diabetes Prevention Effort

(Deming) – A regional health improvement collaborative is working in Luna County to increase awareness of and participation in the National Diabetes Prevention Program.
     Officials with HealthInsight confirmed that Luna County is one of three New Mexico counties targeted for the diabetes prevention campaign. The other two counties are San Juan and Valencia.
     The campaign is focusing on rural, underserved counties, and assisting residents with enrollment and participation in lifestyle-change programs, as well as screenings, detection and referrals.
     Anyone interested should take a brief risk test at www.healthinsight.org/PreventDiabetes to determine if they qualify for a sponsored program.
     Those who don’t qualify for a sponsored program may still qualify for free courses or courses covered by their health insurance.
     HealthInsight states its mission as helping communities achieve significant and continuing improvement in the health of the community, and in the quality and effectiveness of health care.
     The website, again, is www.healthinsight.org/PreventDiabetes.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:

     John Maynes, age 48, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license was suspended or revoked, concealing identity, having an open container, improper equipment, expired registration, no insurance, and on three warrants: a District Court and a Magistrate Court for failure to appear, and a Magistrate for failure to pay fines… Jose Olivas, age 26, was arrested for aggravated battery against a household member… German Maese-Leal, age 46, of Mexico, was arrested on a Hobbs warrant for aggravated assault…
     Ramon Franco, age 18, was arrested for breaking and entering, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia… Fabian Sanchez, age 25, was arrested for interference with officers, possession of drug paraphernalia, and on three warrants: a District Court for failure to comply with conditions of probation, a Magistrate for failure to appear, and a Magistrate for failure to pay fines… Christopher Rios, age 33, was arrested for interference with officers, possession of drug paraphernalia, and on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Javier Perez, age 49, was arrested for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia…
     Valerie Matos, age 31, was arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to pay fines… Breeze Adame, age 30, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Frances Davalos, age 30, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Neira Ochoa, age 24, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…
     Susan Kozubek, age 64, was cited for shoplifting at Walmart… Manuel de Jesus Olguin-Martinez, age 55, was cited for trespassing at a business… and Jerrik Birner, age 18, was cited for minor allowing self to be served alcohol.
     Also, a wood fence was damaged off W. Pine… a five-gallon can of roof-coating valued at over $100 was taken from a location off S. Lime… and a counterfeit $50-bill was discovered at a business off E. Pine.


DHS to Distribute Laptops this Week

(Deming) – Deming High School officials will be distributing laptops and schedules, and taking student identification pictures, beginning this week.
     Assistant Principal Jeannette Cox said on the assigned day, students will take their student ID picture, pay their Lenovo laptop fee of $40 online or $50 in person, receive their laptop, sign a user-agreement form, and pick up their class schedule.
     Students entering 10th grade will do this on Wednesday, August 1st, students entering 9th grade on Thursday, August 2nd, students entering 11th grade on Friday, August 3rd, and seniors on Monday, August 6th.
     Each day staff will be available from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. at the high school.
     Students who miss their assigned day can go Tuesday, August 7th, from 8:30 a.m.-noon.
     More information will be provided on how parents can pay the laptop fee online.
     Also, there will be an orientation for incoming freshman on Thursday, August 2nd, from 6–8 p.m. in the new DHS gymnasium.

(Deming) – Here’s today’s local crime report:
     Benjamin Perez, age 36, arrested for unlawful taking a motor vehicle, aggravated battery on a household member and interference with communications… Juan Carlos Madrid, age 21, arrested for concealing identity, loitering and on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Adrian Alonso, age 23, arrested for probation violations…  Cecil Hicks, age 53, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… Ismael Cordova, age 24, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…  Armando Valenzuela, age 20, arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Everett Tindall, age 40, cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
   In other reports, $600 in electronic items was reported taken from a residence on South 8th street… a video gaming station valued at $300 was reported taken from a residence on Santa Monica, and $200 in damage was done to the door of a 2006 Chevy on North Iron Street. 


Wildcat Band to Hold Concert and BBQ

(Deming) – The Deming High School Band invites the public to their annual concert on the green, which this year, will be in the patio at the new campus of the Deming High School.  

     Friday August 3rd at 6 p.m., Deming High School will be hosting a free concert and barbeque for the community.  
     According to a media release, those in attendance will enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, and get a sneak peek into the 2018-2019 season.
     Get a jump on ordering your 2018-2019 Wildcat Band Shirts while you are there.  No matter what the weather ends up being, the Wildcat Band will hold the concert and barbeque.
     Again, Friday, August 3, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the Deming High School Patio - sneak peek into a new marching band season and free barbeque.


City Working with UNM on Business Incubator Project

(Deming) – City of Deming officials hosted University of New Mexico President Garnett Stokes for a lunch meeting on Wednesday that focused on strengthening the existing partnership between the city and UNM.
     Stokes was in Deming as part of a tour around the state.  She met with Mayor Benny Jasso, City Councilor Dr. Victor Cruz and city administrator Aaron Sera. 
     Since March, the city has worked with UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning to plan a revitalization and business incubator project on the west side of town. 
     Sera said. “There are several closed buildings and it’s the first thing people see when they get off the highway,” “Our work with UNM will help stimulate economic activity, which is good for the whole city.”
     Sera indicated more information about the revitalization and business incubator project will be released as the project takes shape.

     Ayla Speer, age 19, arrested for battery against a household member and criminal damage to property… Marcos DelGardo, age 28, of Las Cruces arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…  Steve Pierce, age 53, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines…  Manuel Montes, age 21, arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear and a US Marshal’s detainer warrant…  Shailen Mhapskar, age 35, arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Elieser Arvizo, age 21, of Palomas, Mexico arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear.
     In other reports, $800 in cash and coins were reported stolen from a residence on Ash street… a 4-wheel scooter valued at $1500 was reported stolen from a street off of the Silver City Highway… $3000 damage was done to a gas pump at the Diamond Shamrock on the Columbus Highway after a semi hit a pump…tools valued at $450 were reported stolen from a residence off the Hatch Highway.


Charter High School Council Meets in Work Session in Las Cruces

(Deming) - The Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School Governing Council will hold a work session on Friday July 27, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday July 28, 2018 at 8:00 a.m.
 
The Work Session will be held at Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces, located on 705 S. Telshor Blvd. Las Cruces, New Mexico.
 
According to the agenda the work session topics will include:
  • School Vision & Mission
  • Renewal Process with Caz Martinez
  • Finance Training for Governing Council Professional Development Update - Laurel Pierce
  • Policy Manual
  • Staff & Student Handbooks
  • GC Development: Strategies to Develop a Valued Community Voice
    The work sessions will be open to the public and no action will be taken.
